As s u n as last winter s snow left Morrow s mountains and the high roads
became passable, groups ot prudent people began hauling finrw m d downhill
All summer long individuals and family groups worked al cutting and hauling
woed. and now that winter is approaching again a constant stream ol pkkujvs
trucks and trailers loaded with wood move into and through Hejvpner
It wasn't too many decades ago that people everywhere dkl all their cook
mg. water heating and home heating with wood Now it seems that mans
have returned to healing homes with it How wonderful it is. however, (hat
most of us don't depend on wood for cooking and tor hot water anymore
Each season has its regular community rituals la te spring through sum
mcr has been the lime that we lecl the pressures related to school finansing
It has been so delightful to learn a little about fat away places through
the eyes o f young travelers Ken Curtis and Nance Wright who have shared
their summer experiences in Thailand and Japan with this community bclore
plunging into their school activities again We are lertain they were good
examples o f Eastern Oregon youth for the people o f Asia to meet

scheduled, hut now that September has passed these groups, boards and
committees are again back to their nine month regular meeting times We
•re proud that nobody of any age need feel lonely in Hcppner hevause there
are groups and activities that are so easy to join
Our many fine churches arr eager to have anyone come tor fellowship,
education and invpuation The very helpful Neighborhood Center urges
women who enjoy companionship to come there on Thursday afternoons
The Senior Citizen Mcalsitc welcomes all men and women over f 41 scats
to the Monday noon meals, presently held at the fairgrounds, anti to join
in the senior activities They have a big annual lund raising rummage sale
coming on Saturday, (V I IK
I he fine 4 H and Home Extension programs are again underway and in
formation about these can be obtained from the OSU Extension Service s
Morrow County office in the Pettyjohn Building or by phoning h7b 9M 2
It is through these programs that some lucky youth and occasionally adults
have gamed wonderful travel cxjvericnces The Extension Service always
encourages involvement in the county fair l-ast Sunday. Sept 2K. the Eair
