- Herbicides are available for
control ol most o f the weeds found
in lawns, but care is needed to avoid
damage to devirable plants
The first step in weed control is to
identify the weeds Then select the
herbicide (or combination o f her
bicidcs) to give the best control
Pesticide labels w ill almost always
have a signal word giving the user
a clue as to how dangerous the pro
duct is lo humans Most herbicides
are relatively nontoxic to humans,
hut all should be kept out o f reach
o f children, and w ill say so on the
label Next to tire '' keep out o f reach
o f children" statement w ill be the
signal word There are three
-Danger This pesticide is highly
toxic A taste to a teaspoon taken by
mouth could kill an average-sized
adult This label w ill also carry the
word "P o iso n " printed in red and
the skull and crosshones
-Warning This product would he
moderately toxic. A teaspoon to a
tablespixin is necessary to k ill an
average sized adult
Cautkvn This product is only
slightly toxic An ounce to more than
a pint is necessary to kill an average
sized adult
Bear in mind that pesticides are
toxic dcrmally (through the skin) and
inhaled as well as orally
When apply ing herbicides, follow
these rules
-Avoid a fine droplet size It w ill
tend to d rift more and harm non-
target plants
Some herbicides should not he us
ed under the drip line lo trees Read
the label
-As a rule, it is better to keep fer
tilizers and hcrhicides separate It is
easigr lo apply the proper type and
amount o f each if they are not
combined
-Do not spray in the wind Drifted
spray w ill damage desirable plants
" I f a little is good, a lot is better,"
does not work with herbicides Read
the label
