"W hat I did was actually test that
statement at the point o f purchase
and with a garment bought tor the
consumer's own use. Gipson said
Her studs is the first to couch the
"country o f o rig in " question among
a variety o f other factors to avoid
bias in the survey She even drew the
16 factors out ol a hat to avoid any
bias in the order they were listed on
the survey form
After arranging with department
and discount store managers in
Portland. Gresham. Jant/en Beach.
Vcaverton. Tualatin and Hillsboro.
(Iipson approached customers who
had jsut bought women's sweaters
and asked them to participate
While they tilled out the survey
fo rm s. G ipson exam ined the
garments quietly noting the country
o f origin on the label
On the second page of the survey
after the "importance of purchase
questions were answered, (iipson
asked whether the garment was
made in the United States or a
foreign country Eighty three per
cent of the respondents either did not
know or gave the wrong answer, just
minutes after buying the garment
Fit. color, coordination with ex
ivting wardrobe, style and quality of
construction were the most sigmfi
cant factors customers gave lor buy
ing the sweaters they did T hose lac
tors scored an average ot more than
six (Hunts on the sutsev s scale ot I
to 7
Expected durability, warmth or
coolness ptopcrties, ease o f care,
price, fiber content, fashion and tccl
averaged between 4 and 6 points
The store where the (Hirehave was
made rated a 1 4 average, designer
label or name brand a 2 51. and.
finally. the country ot origin a 2 40.
(upson said
Her survey found a slight tenden
cy among older shopper* to place
more importance on a garment's
country of origin when buying a
sweater
But w ith respect to
household income, occupation and
education, "there was no significant
difference
O l the 1KI sweaters purchased by
the respondents m Gipson's survey .
6K were manufactured in the United
States and 11 ' in foreign countries
A greater proportion ol domestic
sweaters were purchased at discount
stores (60 percent) compared with
department stores ( (0 percent I The
average price paid in the discount
stores was 59 while in the dejurt
ment stores it was 521
(iipson said she could not tell tnun
her survey if the U S apparel
manufacturers' "B u y American"
advertising campaign is having any
effect on consumer buying habits
because she did not measure their
awareness level before the survey tor
fear of biasing the results
(iipson earned her bacheloi s
degree in child development and
family life from OSU in 1974 When
she completes her master'* degree,
she hopes to gel a job in clothing

The irony o f the situation i* that

when human* arc around
B ill Hines, department w ildlife

about seven fawns every year, plus
a variety ot other w ildlife specie*
" I t -* the same every year The
fawns are normally bom during the
first two weeks o f June Usually by
that second week, the calls start
coming in This year it seems to be
happening earlier I started getting

Hines says he frequently dews n .q

"They w ill keep n tor a while
