every phase of plant gnmth and

within the plant, and even helps keep
plants cool on hot summer days
through

transpiration
But »hen applied improperly,
water can he a leading cause of pro

plants in the home landscape
It'» easy to over water plants
grown in heavy clay soils and to
underwater those grown on sandy,
well-drained wills Overwatering
literally drowns the root system of
a plant while under-watering
dehydrates the root system and
causes it to die of thirst Plants

to apply. water practices can he fine
tuned to provide just enough water
for best plant growih
Overhead sprinkler irrigation, for
instance, is fine for the lawn, hut it
is not an ideal method for watering
fruit trees and shrubs Frequent wet
ting of the foliage with overhead ir
rigation will provide an ideal en
v ironment for the spread of leaf spot
diseases and mildew
If pkivsihle. direct water to the have
of each plant w ith a garden hose and
avoid wetting foliage
A soaker hose operated at low
pressure in the shrub bed will deliver
a uniform volume of water
throughout the bed without welting
the leaves
Trickle or dnp irrigation systems,
available in most garden stores and
null-order catalogs, are ideal for
plants grown outdcxirs They are
economically priced, easy to install,
and can he operated from sundard
outdoor faucets
If plants are watered hy overhead
irrigation, the best time of day to
water is during the early morning
hours That way, the rising sun will
help dry the foliage and minimize
leaf diseases Trickle or drip irrtga
lion system* can he operated almost
any time of the day
Newly planted shrubs and trees
will require more frequent watering
than established plants A thorough
soaking each cay during the first
week then twice a week for the
following four to si* weeks, is the
best prescription for fruit tree and
shrub establishment
During the summer season,
established plants in heavy soils may
require water once a week, while a
thorough soaking twice a week
should he sufficient on sandy wills
It's imporiant to water thoroughly
each time you irrigate to saturate the
root /one and to encourage deep
rooting
A mulching material, such as pine
hark, spread three inches thick over
the surface of the plant's bed will
conserve moisture and reduce water
requirements Mulching will also
maintain a uniform moisture level
and minimize plant stress caused hy
wet dry fluctuations in soil water
