Routine Inquiry boosts Lions eye bank
T o the editor:
On February I , 1986, O regon 's
Routine Inquiry" l a » went into e f
fect. requiring designated hospital
personel to ask next-of-kin to con
sider organ donation upon the death
o f a relative This is the first legisla
tion i f its kind in the country
The effects o f Routine Inquiry
were seen immediately at the Oregon
I ions Eye Bank at G ood Samaritan
Hospital and M edical Center The
number o f eyes the Eye Hank receiv
ed in February 1986 was double the
amount normally processed Routine
Inquiry w ill help the Lions Eye Hank
help .1 much greater numher o f the
eight percent o f all visually han
dicapped Oregonians who could
benefit from a corneal transplant
This would not he possible without
the help o f some unsung heroes The
I ions Eye Hank is assisted by a net
work o f tissue collection centers
located at funeral homes throughout
( iregon Funeral directors volunteer
their time and services to rem ove
eves that have been donated to the

important network

momentum throughout the state,

funeral directors, the unsung heroes
without whom this revolutionary
new legislation would have little
effect

more heavily on propertv and in
com e taxes for their suppon
Packw ood's proposal allows the
proverbial cam el's nose under the
tent It opens the door to further ero
sion and eventual elimination o f the
state and local tax deduction It this
proposal is approved, it w ill make
what remains o f the deduction
vulnerable to the mounting pressures
to balanc e the federal budget on the
hacks o f liv a l taxpasers without
directly raising tederal taxes
