In their final game of the season,
Heppner* junior varsity boys bas
ketball team suffered a disap
pointing 48-46 loss to the Weston
McKwen Tiger Scots on Saturday.
Feb 22 Heppner had beaten the
same Tiger-Scot team by six the
night before Under first-year coach
Lee Padberg the Mustangs finished
with a 4-9 record
For the first time all season the
Mustangs were in double digits after
one period as they took a 10-4 lead

McKwen stayed in the game in the
first half with free throws The
Tiger Scots made 7 of the II free
throws in the second quarter to the
Heppner at 17-17 by intermission
Weston McKwen went on a 12 3
tear early in the third frame to grab
a 29-20 lead The Mustangs (ought
back with a 10-3 stretch run of their
own thanks to a full court press to
come within 32-30
Weston McKwen never trailed in
the concluding quarter and profited
from 6 of 10 foul shots Bob Shanks
nailed 3 of 4 free throws in the last
minute to help the Tiger-Scots to the
48-46 win
Dick Devin gunned in 13 points for
Heppner to lead all scorers Mark
Fishburn and Bryan Padb«*rg added
11 and 8 points respectively for
Heppner
The Mustangs snared 33 rebounds
and were led by Hyan Duncan w ith 7
boards Fishburn and Terry («ray
each brought down 6 rebounds, w hile
Devin added 4 Ty Arliogast handed
out four assists and Devin three
Gray came up with four steals, all on
the full court press
"We fouled too much and didn t *
screen off on the boards." explained
Padberg
Bryan Padberg a freshman. l«-d
the team in scoring with a 10 8
average Devin, a freshman as well,
put in 7 4 points per game while
Fishburn. a sophomore, added 6 3
points per outing
Fishburn (4 9 boards a game) and
Devin (4 I boards a game' led the
team in rebounding Devin and
Padberg also led the team in assists
Coach Padberg said that there
were no real standouts on the team
and that no one individual is to
blame for the disappointing season
"Every game it was a different kid
that played well for us." he said "I
don't blame the kids It was my first
year of coaching and I might not
have got the point across I do hope
to be back next season ''
