What is l omel Halley’
Comet
Halley irhymes with valley) is a
famous periodic comet which will
soon pass near Karth on its trip
around the Sun Physically. Comet
Halley is a chunk of ice and rock
about three miles in diameter As it
nears the Sun and becomes warmer,
this nucleus forms a thin halo of gas
and dust called the coma The Sun's
energy causes this gas to glow like a
fluorescent light A large wispy tail
is then created as the gas and
particles are swept (pack from the
coma Under good viewing condi
tions. this can be a spectacular sight
from Karth
When can it be seen-* The best
viewing from the Pacific Northwest
will tie as the comet approaches the
Sun. from November 14. 1985
through January 25. 1986 It will be
visible in binoculars by November
The second period for viewing the
comet will be from April 20 through
June to. 1980
What will it look like’
That
depends greatly upon when and
from where you look
At its
brightest, it will be visible with the
unaided eye as a hazy patch of light
with a long wispy tail Karly and
late views in binoculars will show
mostly the hazy coma It will not be
as bright as during its last visit in
1910 It will be dimmer because the
distance at its closest approach will
be three times as great, because it
will be very low in the southern part
of the sky from the Northwest and
because since 1910 humans have
created tremendous “ light pollu
tion ."
Where will it be in the sky’ It will
pass through the constellations
Taurus and Aries in November and
December 1985. and will be halfway
up in the sky At its brightest. on the
inbound leg of its journey, it will be
in Pisces and Aquarius
Atound
Christmas and into January look
about two hours after sunset above
Jupiter, low in the southwest sky
laiter. as it goes away from the Sun
and the Karth. it might be spotted
before sunrise, again low in the
southeast, below Sagittarius
The
tail will tie seen at its greatest length
from late March to early April
Krom April 20 1980 to June 10 1986 it
will be in the constellation Crater
By late April, the comet w ill only be
visible with'at least binoculars
What kind of telescope should be
used to see it’ The best optical aid is
a wide field telescope Binoculars
should also provide good views The
7 x 54) binoculars are good for
stargazing
Comet Halley will be
visible without optical aid when at
its brightest
Where should I go to see it’ Go to
high elevations and as far to the
south as you can If you can afford
to go to the southern hemisphere, the
comet will be higher above the
horizon and can be viewed more
easily Comets are dim objects, so
go away from city lights
Go far
enough from a large city so that you
can see the Milky Way This is the
place where it should be dark
enough to see the comet The Milky
Way can be seen from the Golden
dale Observatory Light pollution is
spreading rapidly In 1910 this was
not a problem, but careless lighting
has just about eliminated the prac
tice of amateur astronomy near
cities
Kor the best views in the
Northwest United Stales plan to
come to the Goldendale Observa
lory Comet Halley makes a great
excuse for a trip The best times for
observation from the Goldendale
Observatory are November 14. 1985
through January 25. 1986 and from
April 20 to June 10. 1908
When ran I see it again’ You will
not see Halley's Comet again unless
you a rr very young and live at least
78 more years Comet Halley comes
near the Karth once every 76 years
This is most likely your only chance
Knjoy viewing the solar system's
must famous comet and be sure to
point it out to your children In the
year 2061 they may remember view
mg it in 1985 or 1986
Where can I gel more informa
lion’
Come to the Goldendale
Observatory near Goldendale. W a
shington

weekly presentations in the theater

the Comet will be viewed through a
variety of telescopes The public is
