As many of you know. this is my last regular column for the Gazette Times
as I'm moving to Boise (I'll be there by the time this gets printed
The experience of writing this column has been great for me being able to
express your opinion and have somebody read it in the newspaper is a fun
feeling ( I'm assuming, to satisfy the smart alecks out there you know who
you are i that somebody reads this stutf >
There are a lot of things about Heppner and Morrow County that I'm going
to miss, but this is supposed to be a sports column so I'll stick with that area
I'd also better hurry up or I'll run the risk of getting serious, which would
ruin my reputation
-I'm going to miss golf at the Willow ("reek Golf Course Although the kids
who sell the balls that they fish out of Willow Creek are about to undergo a
significant income loss l
I'm going to miss out on the explanation of the age old question
What is
Heppner s fight song"'
'On Wisconsin' and The Notre Dame Victory
March do give you a choice, however
I'm still going to miss my cake that I won but never got at halftime of a
ballgame two years ago
I 'm going to miss City League Basketball but I sure won't miss having to
ref once a year >
I'm going to miss finding out how Dale Holland got so smart in one year to
go from last to first in the Crystal Ball
I'm going to miss the investigation of how liorian Forrar got chosen to
shoot the halftime shot for $KJ0 If Kenny Turner hadn't boon holding the
check I'd have suspected a " fix '' for sure
I'm going to miss the Sunday coed softball games even if they do consist
of guys from Arlington pounding homeruns off the lops of houses across the
street in lone
I'm going to miss fulfilling my sociology project for live year itu r ty l^
the strange circumstances that cause people to drive to "the turnaround" in
front of the Courthouse, and then go bark the other direction
•I'm going to miss (boy am I going to miss 1 being here the day Oregon
finally beats Oregon State in basketball When that day comes I want Terry
Thompson and Kenny Turner and Brent Fggrrs to just pretend that I am
here and imagine what I'd be saying
-On the other hand. I'm even going to miss being here the day Oregon State
finally beats Oregon in football (but not too much i
I'll miss the Monday night bowling league even though my teammates
probably forget what I look like by now
In my time in Heppner I ve seen some real contrasts in High School sports,
from state tournaments in front of thousand* of screaming fans to
oh for the season teams in front of 25 loyal parents and coaches tine thing
that I've never seen. I'm proud to say, is a Heppner team that quit That,
more than anything else including trophies and winning records, is
something we should all lie proud of
I've enjoyed the two years that you ve let me rattle on at a pace slightly
less than Dick Vitale my secret hero along with M.inute Hof i now known as
Marvelous Manute after his recent boxing debut
I know I'm still an
amateur (defined as one who still runs out and pays 25 cents to buy the puper
so he can read his own column i but you've made me feel like a pro Oh yeah,
did I say-1 I'm going to miss Morrow County most all And so it goes
