Bears Raiders Super Bowl Just had our lunch handed to us on Sunday It's

awful When the game was on the line the Patriots looked like the veteran

Wintertime is an offbeat lime lo think about baseball, so maybe it's
appropnale that Bill Veeck died Iasi week He'd lieen making baseball news
in unusual wasy for Ihe belter pari of the Iasi half century
Veeck was the maverick hosetiall owner whose personality and flair of Ihe
game far oulslrip anything lhal today's "colorful" owners can produce he
is best remembered as the owner who signed the midget Kddie Gaedel to
play for the lackluster St Louis Browns for one game He should, of course,
also tie remem tiered as the owner who generated intense fan support for
baseball wherever he went to Cleveland in the forties with the Browns and
the While Sox in the fifties and again with the Sox in the 70's
So much has been written about Bill Veeck in the last week that It's hard to
say anything that doesn't sound trite
The fans loved him for his
unorthodoxy, the other owners loathed him for the same reason Those of us
who really love baseball, however, recognired in Veeck a special quality that
only exist* in a lucky lew Roger Kahn recogmres it in his book Tommy
laiSorda and Pete Bose and Mark Kidrych show it on the field It's hard to
really quantify, hut it's just a love for the game of baseball that isn't
Justifiable for grown men There s no natural law that permits grown people
lo associate themselves so exclusively and completely with the game of
baseball hut there are a lot of us out here who are glad that they do
In the modern era of owners grabbing the headlines George Steinbrenner
and Ted Turner come quickly to mind there is always the comparison to
Bill Veeck And then again there is no comparison Veeck was an American
hero in every sense of the word
