Upset by rudeness of audience
To the Editor
This past Thursday was the
Christmas program at our grade
school There was a large crowd
gathered to see their young children
perform
The children were very
orderly and did their best I enjoyed
hearing songs with a spiritual tone to
them
What upset me so much was the
rudeness and in difference their
parents, grandparents, and friends
There was talking and movement
'people going in and out) going on
while Ihe children were performing
The whole back section was empty
before Ihe program was over It was
very evident that these parents and
grandparents came only to watch
their own child and when they were
done it was time for them to move
on
The rudeness was not only to Ihe
children performing hut to others in
•he audience who were trying to
listen It was very distracting and I
was not sitting in the hack
The
talking waa going on throughout the
audience
Mow do we expect to leach our
children to respect others to be
thoughtful and considerate of others
when these are the examples that
adults are showing them

legislatu re is full-time job
To the Editor
In reply lo your recent letter of
legislative pay increases I would
like lo make a few comments
I voted against all pay increases,
however, the 1150for larger districts
I feel Is warranted and needed
As a state senator representing a
third of the state of Oregon is it fair
to fie paid the same as a senator in
Salem. Oregon’ I have lo maintain
two homes when in session, I also
have to eat my meals out and obtain
lodging when in Salem on state
business
There is a real misconception who
actually serves in Salem legislation
la-gislators don't go home to their
farms, jobs and businesses Most of
them have one job, being a legisla
tor I was a businessman when I
went lo Salem, but I am no longer
To he a good senator in my district is
a full time job If you don't believe
me come and live with me for a
month
My answer to the problem is
belter management
With 13
interim committees, tlx statutory
committees. 18 statutory with legi
slative participation and legislative
work on other government business,
add to (his al leasl six months of
session in odd numbered years This
is guaranteed full lime employ ment
for legislators
The problem with legislators and
government is we pay too much for
too little We need a change in the
