on a master's degree in soil science
at Washington State University,

by the Soil Conservation Service

Franklin counties. Washington The

degree in soil morphology and gene

Count, taken on Christmas Day.

The count itself is undoubtedly the
big birding event of the year, and for
some groups it means days and
weeks of strategy planning and
logistics in trying to amass, in a
single calendar day, the biggest
possible list of birds in the desig
naledarea By tradition that "count
area" is a unique circle with a
15 mile diameter, or of roughly 177
square miles The Kuggs Hardman,
has as its center on Highway 207
about three miles south of Ruggs
Within this circle, couni organi­
zers attempt to field as many
competent birders as they can
These birders are grouped into
"parties.” each with a section of the
circle, or points on Ihe map. which
they alone will search >or census'
there is no upper limit on Ihe
