Additional services sought for
Heppner DMV office
Following a prrtenlation lo I he
Cham ber of Com m erce aeveral
week» ago by representatives from
the Oregon state Department of
Motor Vehicles. State Kepresenta-
five Kay French (K Diat M i, says
that he has been making personal
contacts with the DMV in an effort to
keep the fulltime office here in
Heppner
According to French, the DMV
claims that the volume of business
at the Heppner office only justifies
0 « time person Chamber member
l-arry Mills reports that many peop
le are concerned that reducing the
hours at the Heppner office might
mean its eventual closure because
people expecting the office to be
open fulltime would have to go to the
offices in Hermiston or Fendleton if
they were unable to be in Heppner
during the times that services were
Fifth Q u a rte r
provided here
French says that DMV has assur
ed him that they will continue to
"provide the same amount of ser
vices here as before" but empha
sizes that this does not mean the
office will be open the same number
of hours
In order to justify the fulltime
office, French says it may be
possible to expand the types of
services which the office provides
If. for instance PL'C, trip, and
overwidth permits could be issued in
Heppner it might increase the
office '» volume sufficiently to justify
a fulltime employee
It’s not only people in the Heppner
area who will be effected if the office
hours are cutback, but people from
Condon. Fossil and the surrounding
arras who will then have that much
farther tO go to a DMV Off

It’s a great time of year if you happen to be a football fan the high school
playoffs are reaching the critical state, the colleges this week play their
traditional rivalry games, the pros are starting to get serious lbout things
The Bears, in particular, seem to be serious about playing football They
handed Dallas the most one sided loss the Cowboys have ever taken, and
even at 44-0 the game wasn't as close as the score indicated Of course us
non < owboy fans were brokenhearted to see the mighty Landry men get
laundered
In state AAA football, the Pendleton Bucks coniine to forge ahead, despite
play ing conditions that have been less than ideal the last two outings First in
the rain in Pendleton against Hillsboro, then in the mud at North Bend, the
running-oriented Buckaroos have managed victories This week Pendleton
tackles one of the traditional powers of Oregon football Medford, in a game
being played on the astroturf of at Kugene » Autzen Stadium. Friday night
In other action. Mountain View upset No I ranked Corvallis, making it two
years in a row that the Spartans have lost their top ranking in Central
Oregon ilast year to Crook County i. Looks like these Kastern Oregon terns
are just too tough for the undermanned boys from the big city
No way lo predict at all whay will happen in Kugene in the Oregon Oregon
State game The Ducks would appear lo be both a stronger team and a
healthier team, but this game always makes me nervous
Did any body else try to listen to the Oregon game on K l’MA on Saturday
night1* I tried to No game, so I called the station and they said that they had
forgotten to call Kugene during the week to get the access telephone number,
so they couldn’t put it on Oh well. I'm probably the only person in town who
turned in anyway
The college basketball season gets underway this weekend with something
called the Pre season NIT tournament It's an attempt to boost up the dying
old tournament Anyway. one of first round games is Dayton vs Tulsa and I
know I ’ll be the only one around w ho cares about that game
Wall, that's about It I've got no predictions on the COOS! game other
than to offer this whoever loses will be heard to say "Wait til basketball

feature of the restaurant was the

Mrs Goheen also saw the new

Live by the sword, die by the sword That's the motto of the selectors in
the Crystal Ball Those of us who got healthy In Denver with the snowball
game of last week were bagged by the overtime blocked field goal heroics of
the Broncos this week
Guest selector Bob Ploy har was nothing short of awesom. as hr tied for the
lead in last week s picks In a desperate attempt to let the regulars beat the
guest for once, we have adopted the "Lightning can’t strike tw ice " approach
with this week’s guest Several weeks ago Hon Bowman rmharassed the
regulars, so this week we re welcoming his co worker Ted Toll to the guest
spotlight We re all counting on you. Ted
