The Pacific Ocean has a m ajor influence on the weather ir. the Northwest,
particularly in the coastal rones and in other areas west of the Cascade
K.inge The predominant west to east m m em enl of weather at cur latitudes
provides ocean air that is moist and com paratively warm during the winter
and cool in the summer As a result, the annual climate is classified as
'mild "
The Cascade Ratine acts as a large fence often preventing (he ocean air
from moving into the eastern sections of Washington and Oregon Thus, the
weather on the east side of the mountains is frequently the result of the
intrusion of Canadian air or air from the desert southwest Both of these air
masses are cold or cool during the w inter and hot or warm in the summer but
relatively dry during the entire year
Occasionally, during the summer, warm and moist air from off of Baja,
California will make its way northward through California to the Northwest
This air lie vs provides both sides of the Cascades with the right combination
of heat and moisture to produce thunder storms and generally "s tic k y"
weather
Restrictions in the movement of the various air masses due to terrain
features, are largely responsible for the variety of climates found in the
Pacific Northwest Over relatively short distances, we find the cool, moist
air of the marine clim ate d ose to the coast, the dry desert air of the eastern
basins the cool alpine air of the Cascades, and the mild valley air typical of
the Willamette Valley
Few areas in the country have such a variety of
climates
