Blow 'em out run up the scare' Have you followed the recent deflate
i min.ling UM Pendleton lleriniston football game’ It seems that the
sporting circles in Pendleton spent most of last week speculating about
whether the Bucks ranked third in the state and undefeated could run up
KXi points onthe harpless Hermislon Bulldogs As it turned out both teams
were pretty close to their season averages as Pendleton won !S7 6 In the
meantime, however, some interesting questions came up
The "East Oregonian" conducted a survey of Intermountam Conference
coaches on the subject of running up the score and all the roaches in the IMC
denounced it except one Pendleton's veteran coach Don Kegua Ignoring (or
now the fart that In moat years Pendleton is the runner and the rest are the
runnee, the others claim that running up the score distorts the true spirit of
high school sports, while Kequa adopted a more Darwincsque "survival of
the fitte st" approach Kequn’s attitude is we ll score as many as we ran
and you can do the same to us next year That altitude seems to rankle other
IMC coaches, perhaps because next year never seems to come for
Pendleton
As a general rule. I agree with the IMC m ajority Especially at the high
schiail level, a football team makes do with what talent It has (We’ll
overlook for today the question of prep recruiting.
Kunning up
astronomical scores has side effects far beyond the football field Having
been on the receiving end as a high school student. I can tr ll you that
everything from school spirit to tryouts for other sports can suffer when a
particular team is constantly humiliated by outrageous scores
All of which brings us hack to the Pendleton ilermtston game Most of you
w ill recall that Heriniston beat Pendleton last year for the first time in 62
years The other side of the coin from running up the score is rubbing it in
when you do win Hermislon didn't rub it in. they ground it in with both feet
The - ..-oration went on for months At the Pendleton Hermislon basketball
game the scoreboard blazed out with the football score, while banners and
the players' warmup jerseys reminded the Birds of the football win
The dow nside of playing with the big boys is that you have to play the big
hoys' game Ilermtston had its fun with Pendleton last, but as they say
