Energy specialist challenges
district’s T A G with solar power

Boon Doherty (left) and Jim Holtz make solar cookers
with help of OMSI specialist lyn n
l.ynn Vanderkamp. an energy
specialist from ih** Oregon Museum
of Science ami Industry was at the
Morrow County School District Off
ice last Wednesday and Thursday as
part of the school district's Chall
enge program for talented and
gifted fifth through eighth graders in
the county's schools
Vanderkamp presented a session
on waterpower Iasi year and this
year conducted a class on solar
energy She describes the session on
solar power as less controversial in
focus becauac the message centrrs
on technology, the different ways to
trap the sun's heat, repeating some
of the electrical theory presented at
last year s sessions and from there
moving to new energy sources
Much of her presentation involved
“ hands on" experience for the stu
dents and use of of “gizmos."
devices such as the VandcGraff
which allows them to feel an elrctri
cal charge in a safe way Kach class
also made solar cookers and some
made sun docks, so that each
student had something to lake home
to remind him of the project
Vanderkamp has been working
with talented and gifted children for
four years with OMSI and prior to
that time taught puppetry classes
for talented and gifted She is also a
past coordinator of an alternate
energy house She says she enjoys
working with talented and gifted
youth liecause they generally have
more energy and are so incredibly
healthy that their minds are active,
too and rurious It's a challenge
Heppner Happenings
By Mary Bryant 676-9493
Mrs Vicky Hynd. from Tulsa.
Oklahoma daughter of Georgr and
Anna Mae Steagall, visited at their
home recently
She arrived in
Cortland. October 17. and attended
the wedding of her brother George
Steagall II and Dianne Wenger in
Salem October IB
Mr and Mrs
Steagall and Tommy also attended
the wedding from here and were
guests of their son It was the first
time all of their children had tieen
together in three years Mrs Hynd
returned to Heppner with her folks
for a longer visit and flew home on
October 24 They had to detour on
their way home because of the rock
stub's and crossed the Columbia at
Cascade lax-ks
Vanderkamp
she says, to turn them on to ideas
and to keep their interest focused on
a topic It's important to keep them
tuned in Many tunes in a regular
classroom, they will tend to phase
out or become bored because they
have grasped the lesson while other
students are still struggling with it
Some teachers resent singling these
kids out as special.“ but working to
keep these active minds involved
gives them less tune to lie bored
These students will tend to question
for themselves, and generally have
a lot of self motivation which, if not
directed in a constructive manner is
evidenced in their questioning of
authority and tendency to find other
ways to use their energy
Although Vanderkamp does travel
with the OMSI programs to arras
outside Portland. Morrow County is
the least |nipulated district which
she visits The county she says, has
jiut a lot of effort into the program
and IS more organized which is
necessary to organize transport.!
lion when the kids are spread out
over such distances
Two other o.MSI energy teachers
also travel with programs on wind,
fossil fuels, nuclear energy archae
ology. and astronomy
Because of
Bonneville Cower Administration
funding the energy presentations
travel in a four state region while
the other programs are limited to
Oregon, but Vanderkamp reminds.
OMSI is Oregon's museum, not
Portland's, so the rest of the state
should take advantage of the pro
grams which it offers
