Now we've come to the end of the year s tenth month which closes
tomorrow with one of childhood's favorite day's. Halloween It is good to
know that Heppner children are being invited to supervised parties this
year The largest may be at the Klk'* rooms where the DeSpains. who have
opened their home on spook night for quite a few year*, have contributed
some of their scary equipment
Among those busy groups, the Heppner Chamber of Commerce is working
at getting together a new county promotional brochure, a welcome
newcomers" coupon book and is ready to tiegm the selection process for the
annual First Citizens Banquet
The so busy Senior Citizens are still selling chances on the three cords of
firewood the men cut and hauled downtown, and the senior women are
having a What Not" sale table each Wednesday noon at the meulsite and
have plans to continue their series of card parties at the Kpiscopal Church
The United Methodists had a successful hay ride, cider press and wiener
roast in the twautiful sunshine at the Doug Drake ranch last Sunday Next
Saturday. Nov 2. that congregation had invited everyone to the church for a
pre holiday bazaar and luncheon and that same day the Lexington Uidy
Bugs are holding their third annual bazaar
When "valley people from the Slate of Western Oregon" ask what do you
do up in that dessert area’ - I hope you all are saying we do plenty and we
also have lots of wonderful sunshine'
Personally my cup has runneth over with activities in (H-iober including
the fun trip to Heno with dear friends and the evenings of joy watching the
baseball playoffs and the World Series when I really cheered at seeing the
Kansas City Koyals force a seventh game, that no run. II lo 0 game that
gave the Hoyáis their very first world championship
New forage growth scatters elk
Hoosevelt Klk are widely scatter
ed due to the new green forage
growth from recent rains and warm
weather, said Glen Ward of the
Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife
He anticipates that 60
percent of the Klk hunters will opt
for the first season October 30 to
November 3 and that only about 40
percent w ill hunt the November » 17
season The elk population is stable
compared to last year, he said, but
since moat branch antler bulls were
harvested last year, hunters can
expect to bag mostly yearlings this
year
Hunting conditions should im
prove with snow. Ward concludes
the best chances will lie in thickets
lacking roads
