A Night At The Elks
Welcome back sports fans hope your had a good summer So much has
happened over the summer that the juices should be flowing for a good fall
season of sports
By the time this issue goes to print Fete Rose w ill likely own the all time
hit record in m ajor league baseball I have to be one of the diehard Fete fans,
but even I have gotten a bit weary of the overkill I ’ve seen so many pictures
of his tnug that it's burned into my brain Make no mistake, however, hts
accomplishment is truly awesome (in the accurate sense of that wordi and
deserves most of the attention that It has gotten One other thought if you
think there has been overkill out here, you should spend a little time in the
Cincinnati area, as I dfd last week I would estimate that Fete Rose
appeared in three out of every four commercials that had anything to do with
sports
The locals certainly have gotten off to a rousing start in college football,
with the Ducks. Beavers, and Portland State all going 1-0 Does anybody
know how long it has been since that happened’ When you consider that ail
three teams scored in the 40s in winning their openers, I get one general
feeling enjoy if while it last*
The NFL start was certainly topsy turvy Anybody want to bet on the odds
you could have gotten on the quinella of Minnesota (over the 49er*i and
Houston iover Miami?) It may turn out to be a crazy year in the pro ranks
one thing that w ill certainly scramble the standings w ill tie the return of the
lost sheep from the USFL Some teams have acquired the equivalent of four
or five No 1 draft picks all at once
I was glad to see Ivan Lendl win the U S Open tennis tournament Lendl is
a dour, sometimes childish player, but I jusl like him for some reason He
always seems to be the second choice of the fans in any match he plays In
any event I'm glad he whipped John McEnroe (I'm glad when anybody
whips John McEnroe ) On the womena' side, Hana Mandiltkova made it a
Czech-ered year by upsetting Martina Navratilova
One onther tennis note for the summer Pam Shriver and Martina pul a
real heating on Vitas Gerulaitas and Bobby Riggs, hopefully retiring the
latter for good His act was a novelty ten years ago. but now it's just a farce
It amazes me that anybody would pay him tioo.ooo to play tennis like he
does
The locals are on the road this Friday night against the always tough
Riverside Pirates A good turnout sure would be a boost for the young
Mustangs
Next week we’ll try to crank up the crystal ball and get our band of
fearless predictors in gear Me might try some different approaches this
year, so if anybody has a suggestion, let me know
of
