To the Kditor
For tim e untold, one group of
people has been d is p la ce d by
another
It is not a unique occur
rrnor Nevertheless, there is some
thing unsettling in the scenario we
have witnessed in Central Oregon
over the past four years
The truth is we face a grave
situation in dealing with Bhagwan
Shree Kajneesh and his followers
Whilr our public officials deal with
the issues of land use. election laws,
conflict of Church and State and
violation of im migration regula
lions no effort has been made to
relieve those who have home the
brunt of this invasion the people in
the community of Antelope
These people have seen their
p ro p erty valu es d ep leted
th eir
taxes raised Their school has been
loat. litigation is still pending in the
Kahneeshee effort to gain title to the
old Community Church In the town
itself people have found the constant
H ajn eeshee s u rv e illa n c e and
harassment so threatening that they
have lite r a lly abondonrd th eir
homes and left Only three fam ilies
who lived in Antelope in July of 19*2
remain and we find il necessary to
leave for extended periods of tim e
It is a tragedy for Oregonians to
stand by while Kajneeshees ridicule
our values, disrupt our community,
destroy our way of life and use our
tax money to further entrench their
religious commune
Over the years hundreds, perhaps
thousands of people have said to me,
“ I wish I could h e lp '" - Well now

Comments by sorrir of your colie
agues with other publications zero in
on the difference in the regulation
or deregulation process in the long
distance telephone business around
the nation
For expample. Oregon is cited by
a national industry publication.
"Telecomm unications R eport." as a
progressive slate
It describes
legislation overwhelm ing approved
by the Oregon legislatu re as "the
must sweeping state deregulatory
bill yet enacted by state lawmakers
(anyw here! “
Briefly the legislation sponsored
by Public Utility Commissioner
G ene M audlin, to be e ffe c t iv e
January I. 1988
Provides the possibility of equal
deregulation for all providers of long
distance service m Oregon
Provides flexibility in pricing
Allows the P I T to classify tele
communications companies based
upon competition and availability of
service alternatives
Commissioner Maudlin is to be
commended for allowing competi
lion to be the driving force in the
telecommunication market place
On the other hand, the Band
Bulletin <61085» edttorally cast)
gated the Federal Communications
Commission for " coming up with a
rule designed to drive telephone
users a bit more crazy than they
already are "
