A basketball advisory is [Misled lor the following areas anylxxly claiming
to lie a college hiMip fan had lietter lx- prepared to deal with some pretty-
heavy crowing from Big Fast Conference fans, as three of the Final Four
'Georgetown. St John s and Villanova> come from the land of Patrick
Fwing
All season long. Fast Coast fans have claimed that their brand of ball was
clearly the lies! who can argue now’ Memphis Slate will enter the finals
with the dual distinction of being the only non Big Fast schisil and the only
non Catholic school in the tournament
Not to detract from the great success of the Big Fast this year, but it has
lieen a long time since one conference had so many top flight seniors all in
the same year Patrick Fwing, Chris Mullin. Bill Wennington and the three
guys from Villanova McLain. Mclaun and Pinckney > certainly have to rank
at the top of any list of all at once graduating classes
As for the finals, who knows’ Georgetown handles! St John * pretty easily
the last two times after the Kedmen upset the Moyas by one point after
blow ing a really big lead You hate to bet against Chris Mullin and Co , but
G town is awfully strong The difference could be St John s inability to trap
and play full court defense If the Moyas get an early lead, it could la- a blue
day for the Kedmen tine thing for sure, however Whichever team wins had
tietter not start posing for the title pictures too soon Villanova and Memphis
State are deceptively strong OUt on a limb" Take Georgetown to beat
Memphis State in the finals
A comment on all the talk of Chris Mullin being another Iairry Bird No
way Maybe come back and talk to me in five years, but for now. iairry Bird
liMiks like one of the greatest players ever to play Mullin s not quite at that
stage yet
(juote of the tournament A telecaster for the NC State St John's game
predicted that Jim Valvano's strategy would be to turn the second half into a
twenty minute game " Profound
Did you catch Jack Kainsay s comments about Detroit s Kelly Tripucka in
the Sunday Oregonian’ Not loo complimentary Something about him being
a woofer." (somebody who starts fights when he knows the referee will be
there to step in Too bad Detroit and Portland don't play again this year
That would lie fun
I notice that the wolves are out again in the papers blaming Ralph Miller
for DSL's annual early demise in the tournament lie's '00 old lie's too
Imring Mis players are too restricted The same comments every year I
guess those folks think that he s won 600 games with mirrors Any body who
has had to listen to me knows I'm not a fan of the style of basketball that DSL'
plays, but I d probably accept it with open arms if it meant that my teams
would tie in the tournament every year One thing you can take to the bank,
however. Ralph could give a hoot what the papers and letters to the editors
say Me does things, his own way. period
Prediction if the Yankees and Mets both have good years you'll think the
Big Fast hype was peanuts by comparison
