Although many parts of our region and stale had snowfall before and i
during the Thanksgiving holiday. It was satisfying to have blue skies hen-
much of the weekend The white coating on Monday morning sparkled
briefly in bright sunshine Maybe it was Just a preview We are all aware
that winter isn't officially due here until December 21
Just before November began Morrow County residents learned that nest
year's fair and rodeo could be bigger and better than ever with the naming of
Bridget! Greenup as 196S queen and four princesses Bqhbette Angel), Cindy
Lou Davis, Stacey Kennedy and Sheila Sieler We somehow wish that thr
honors were a bit better distributed around the whole county, but all five
attend Heppner High School
The first Monday of November saw Takrnobu Sato, manager of Nichimen

Morrow County Grain Growers annual banquet That same evening lairry

M y recent out-of town visitors were amazed to see so many dogs
wandering loose around town We hope that the county court will move in
and reully enforce its 1931 licensing ordinance It seems strange that this
ordinance has not been enforced for so many years now and we all know it is
not the dogs' fault
The movement of the Geophysical Service, Inc crew members into this
area has again created a real shortage of rental housing, and has proved to
be a stimulation to various businesses Their arrival points up the need for
more good motel space The G SI office in the former l^-Bush Shoppe space
on Main Street looks like a busy place
It was good to read that the U S Army Corps of Engineers is letting bids
"to correct miscellaneous deficiencies at the Willow Creek Dam Project " It
was distressing to read reporter Peter Wong's lengthy articles in the
KoM-burg New s Key lew of last month telling the people of southern Douglas
County in bold headlines “Avoid Heppner's Pitfalls "
After Wong reported that farmers had put off for a year any decision on
whether to form an irrigation district to buy water from the Willow Creek
Reservoir, he quoted Mayor Cliff Green "But I don t see that they've got any
choice, with the price of electricity for deep w ell pumping w hat it is now. and
what the state is doing with groundwater
The interview with Mayor Cliff
Green concluded with his statement that he believes the town is not divided
about the Willow Creek Dam "A t times, when it heated up. there was some
controversy, but for the most part. I think most people accepted it There
are a lot of people who Joke about it. and there are quite a few people who
still do not like it But it's a fact of life, and I think everybody's learned to
live with it I think it's going to have some potential nobodys seen yet "
Last week saw the Heppner Senior Citizens thankful to lie together on
Tuesday for a Thanksgiving Dinner and a line musical pt gram A si.de

working with various projects to raise money toward the building of it on the
county donated site
Each year folks in the community who need extra help as Christmas nears
are thankful for Pat Brindle and her helpers at the Neighborhood Center
We hear that more volunteers help is needed there now as the time for
assembling Christmas boxes nears Each member of the Soroptimists as
well as several other generous individuals are taking dolls to the center for
little girls I haven't heard anything about some special efforts for toys for
small boys
In this county, as in many parts of the world, so much good is
accomplished by volunteers Think of the good folks who give hours of effort
to the various county boards and committees, of people who volunteer time
to the schools, to the hospital, to the museum and library, to Senior events, to
working with 4 II or Hoy Scouts or with the various churches
Now it is about time to begin thinking about the two citizens in this county
who will be honored as First Lady and First Man at the Heppner Morrow
Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet the second Tuesday night in
January When you've decided on the names of worth candidates please tell
someone on the Honors and Awards Committee of the Chamber Dr Wolff,
the committee chairman, reminds folks that these First Citizens are honored
for various types of volunteer community service and that his committee
will make the final determination of the winners
Don't nuss the musical "A n n ie " at Heppner High School tomorrow and
Friday nights i Nov 29 and 30 i A good attendance is necessary to encourage
the students and community members who have been working toward
giving a fine performance
Of course Saturday at the Morrow County Fairgrounds at thr annual
Artifactory will involve selling food, displaying arts and crafts and helping
prrsons who wish to make decorative items from fresh, mountain grown
greenery This is an annual first Saturday in December, every age event
Be sure to come to the Morrow County Fairgrounds this Saturday
