I m hack Irom Husk)land with a heavy heart, filling the air with
might have t>eens As always. I come away from the Oregon Washington
game shaking my head and telling my self that the Huskies really aren t that
gissi Maybe not hut after awhile it finally sinks in that it is an awfully hig
coincidence that they seem to win the same way year after year
Probably the biggest frustration of having to deal with the Dogs is that we
also have to deal with their fans I've lived in different parts of the country
and seen different kinds of fans but none as insufferable a s the Purple
Wave I U t.ms s e e m to s h ow up w ith t h e idea that their football t e a m theil
fans, their state, and their way of lift* are somehow superior The frustrating
part is that nobody gets the chance to prove differently When they come to
Eugene they all wear purple hats and insist on performing that blasted
Wave
I had hoped that the folks from Seattle would abandon that
silliness when il (secarne so popular everywhere else hut no such»luck
When it finally comes time to play the game, it seems as if the Ducks
always outplay Washington, but they never win Part of that is directly
attributable to I Km Jam es' coaching At halftime of Saturday s game the
teams walked off tied 7 7 A lot of the Husky fans were yelling for Jam es
scalp ( an you imagine that'’ The team ia 64) and ranked No 1 in the nation
and the fans are trying to fire him I like Rich Brooks a lot but if Don Jam es
said he wanted to coach at l'<) my only question would be when do you want
to start ? "
May lie the thing that galls me the most alxiul watching (lie Huskies and
their fans is that I know I d probably lie the same way if I were in their shoes
The I mi II ohi line is that it sure is a lot of fun to win and those of us who don t
are awfully jealous of those who do One thing I would not tie part of The
W'avo
A quick look at the college football scene shows that "the times they are a
changin' Whowould have believed that Alabama would lie >. Pittsburgh
I hand Notre Dame .1 I while South Carolina Kentucky and Boston College
snap up the headlines’’ In a lot of ways it s kind of refreshing I guess a
losing season can happen to anybody Iki you suppose it's too much to ask
for the Huskies to go 4 7 some year’ Nah forget it
