Fillies take Cougars
JV
By DANA R E ID
The Heppner Junior Varsity vol
leyball team had there first match
against the Echo Cougars here at
Heppner on Thursday, Sept 6
The Fillies were off to a good start
when they »cored the first point of
the game Both trams were serving
very well The Fillies seemed to be
more skilled because they were
making a bump set ami spike
combination where as the Cougars
were mainly bumping it over
However, the Echo Cougars did
have a few very hard spikes to the
Fillies but they were in good position
and got the ball back up
Heppner was going strong when
Echo s coach called for a time out
The score at this time was Heppner
12 and Echo 8 After the time out
Echo was a little more excited about
the game and there were some very
good vollies play ed Heppner contin
ued to play good ball and did well
enough to hold the Echo Cougars to
only playing two games

Howdy sports tans By now you've probably all got the college football
bug w ell maybe a little, anyway As always, the new season prompts a few
observations
Where are all the television games that are supposed to swamp the
airwaves this fall? After the Supreme Court ruled that the grcedhoad
universities of Georgia and Oklahoma had won their lawsuit, it was
supposed to result in an overload of TV games May tie last week w as a bad
sample, with the C S Open Tennis on but there weren't any decent games
on The mid afternoon ABC game, usually always on. was nowhere to he
seen Only the UW Northwestern game" was on pretty boring stuff
The various No 1 teams had an interesting week
Miami lost to
Michigan, but that was understandable One of the pre season experts
pic k ill Notre Dame, which got dumped by Purdue The real laughter,
however, was the magazine that picked Arizona State to win the national
title All the SunDevils did was get blasted by Oklahoma Stale by a count of
45 3 <at home in Tempo, no lessl
And yes that is Oklahoma State, not
Oklahoma
I still can't figure the new rule which gives the ball to the kickoff
receiving team at the 30 yard line instead of at the 20. If the kick goes out of
the end zone I don't have a problem with the concept, but the explanation is
a bit fuzzy They want more kick returns Why not move the kickoff hack to
the 35' It seems as if adding another 10 yards for a touchbaek decreases the
icentive to run kicks back Who knows'
—It seems there is a certain 1 unnamed 1 sports writer for the
Gazette Tunes who is walking a little easy around Oregon State fans after
the Beavers dropped a close one to Ohio Slate. 22 14 on Saturday
The
Beavers certainly controlled the first half of the hallgame. and with a few
breaks it may have even been closer It's hard to tell how much of the result
can he attributed to a poor showing by the Buckeyes, and how much is due to
the improvement of the Beavers The key for the Beavers will be to turn in a
similar performance this week Historically, the tsiys in Orange will follow
a strong performance against a good team with weak performances against
poor ones This week's opponent. Arizona, is by no means a "weak"
opponent but the Beavers follow the VS ildcats with Wyoming and Idaho At
least people are talking about something other than when J im - will be fired
For now
- The Oregon Ducks got off on the right foot with a win over laing Beach
Slate It is dismaying that no radio stations carry the Ducks games in
Fastern Oregon There is a 5000 wall station in Ontario, and one in Bend
Not quite enough to reach Heppner Last year a Tri Cities station carried
the games I always wondered about that Now I know Apparently the
Tn-C’ities station wanted to be able to carry L'of O basketball 'Don Monaorc
and therefore took the football games Not so this year
Beginning this week we ll have the Gazette Times panel of "experts”
showing the way for NFL Football We'll try to have a guest expert every
week Warning These predicltons are not warrenteed to make money at
the bookie window
The Crystal <?> Hall
This week we begin a new feature in the G-T. in which our panel of
illustrious "experts" will mysteriously predict the outcome of the week's
NFL games before your very eyes
Through an exhaustive screening
process, we have chosen our experts for this panel The screening process
consisted of in-depth interviews, personal history checks, FBI dossier
assinblage and other covert processes As a result, the swamis chosen for
this task are the following Mike Oths. Brent Fggers, Craig Filching Dale

The Heppner Varsity Volleyball
team had their first match last
Thursday. Sept 6 against the Echo
Cougars here at Heppner
The Fillies went out for the first
game of the match very excited
The Heppner Tillies played a new
offense which they had tieen working
on
Heppner was doing a lot of
bump, set and spiking in the first
match and did well at it although
they were having a bit of trouble
receiving the ball towards the end of
the match Heppner "hung in there
until the end and came out on lop
with a well deserved win
In the second match the Fillies
came out just as enthusiastic and the
Cougars did also Both teams were
out to win and play ed a good game
Heppner didn't use quite as much of
a bump. set. spike combination as in
the first match but when they did.
the Cougars were very seldom able
to gel the hall back over the net to
continue the play
Towards the end
of the match Echo started serving
very well and the Fillies were
having difficulties recovering the
serve The Cougars went on to win
the game
The third game started with pres
sure on both teams
Good vollies
went on throughout the game The
Heppner Fillies were serving well
and were also doing better receiving
the serve
As Heppner pulled
further and further ahead they went
on to win the game and the match A
good match played The final score
for the three games was 15-12. 8-15.
15-10
"For our first match, we played
well Running a new offense created
a few organization problems, but
overall the girls did a good job It is
always good to start off the season
with a win." said Coach Stefani
After playing Tuesday. Sept II
and Thursday , Sept 13, the varsity
Fillies will play their first league
match Tuesday. Sept 18 against the
Pilot Kook Rockets, there at 6 p m
The varsity team travelrd to
Prairie City on Saturday Sept 8 for a
tournament including eight teams
Most of which were triple A schools
The Fillies first match was a
gainst Prairie City Heppner came
out fired up and ready to play The
first game the Fillies were getting
the ball up to the setter and spiking
down hard to Prairie City Heppner
played well but Prairie City oursoor
ed them by three points
The second game Heppner went
out pretty slow They were having
trouble serve receiving
Heppner
also had a lot of pressure on them
Too many little mistakes cost the
Fillies the game and the match Te
final scores were 12 IS. 4 15
Me played very well in the first
game The second game we lost our
momentum and weren t able to get
the ball to the setter." commented
Coach Stefani
Heppner wasn't out of the tourna
ment yet. they still had one more
chance For the second match the
Fillies went up against Vale
The first game Heppner Just
couldn't get things together and the
game went to Vale
The second gome Heppner came
hack and really played great ball
There were a lot of good things
happening on the court The Fillies
looked more organized on offense
Heppner also played excellent de
fense especially at the net There
were good vollies between Heppner
and Vale but finally after the lead
bad changed hands several times
Vale went ahead by two and won the
game The final scores were I 15.
15-17
"M e got off to a slow start The
second game the players came from
tiehind and played a very good
game, said Coach Stefani
This loss put Heppner out of the
lournument, but just for practice
and fun they played one more match
against the Prairie City JV team
which was taking the place of
another school that could not attend
Heppner won this match
Prairie City and Pendleton played
for the championship game Pendle
ton camd out on top which meant
they were the champions
The Fillies first match of the
season was a success
The first
game ended with Heppner IS. Echo
10
The second game was even
better for the Fillies. Heppner 15.
Echo 8
There was a small error in last
week's pre season story for the
junior varsity team There are three
other players. Beth Forrar. Tina
Davidson and Missy Eubanks
" I feel that they did very well for
their first match
They worked
together as a team with a more
consistent bump. set. spike offense
than I expected I'sually during the
first match, the girls gel loo nervous
to set it up
They had their
moments, but managed to calm
themselves enough to play well I
was pleased with their ability to pull
everything together." said Coach
Howe
The Junior Varsity's next match is
against the Riverside Pirates at
Hoardman September 13 beginning
at 5 p m
