Now that the Olympics are officially let s retire that w ord'over it slim e
for me to recap some things that must have been said by somebody else,
somewhere Given that the journalists and I use that word advisedly 1
outnumbered the athletes, it 's hard to find a fresh angle left on the Olympics
Remember my column of three weeks ago. claiming to lie the "official

healthy amount of gasoline, and the commercials did little to inspire me to
drive my car any more than I do now Seems like they should save the
commercials for Iranian television, where a liltle positive image making
would he a big help
Commercials II ARC seemed to have little regard for the action at hand in
presenting its marathon of commercials In the real marathon, I watched 24
miles of prelim inary running, only to have the network go to a commercial
at the crucial point in the race Similarly, they always seemed to return
from a commercial in time for the silver medal presentation, if that
recipient happened to he wearing red. white and blue

It was a sadistic delight to watch the nightly
newscasters try to plod through the difficult to pronounce names Some
tried gamely, others simply reMirted to ‘ Romania got the silver, etc
Howard Cosell Howie did more turnarounds than Mary Lou Ketton He
started out in his usual cheerleader vein for the U S A when the criticism
started and the f S kept winning, he bravely pronounced that he would not
insult the hoys in the blue by failing to root for them Then he alternately
built up the other teams, then pronounced his neutrality, then came hack to
his self appointed role as assistanl American coach
The best part of
watching Cosell is his interviews with the winning Americans Most are
pretty young guy* completely exhausted from their hout, and Howard it
asking "Would it he an effective categorization to classify your triumph as
a quantum leap over your prior endeavors’ " L’h. sure Howard
The (losing ceremonies were nothing short of outstanding and this is
coming from a "non closing ceremony" lype person I always thought the
