Rodeo Queen Sylvia 1-add is most
definitely a g irl on the go
laving on her fam ily's wheat and
cattle ranch outside of lone. Queen
Sylvia keeps a busy schedule for
herself with school, hobbies, work
and. of course, the many court
activities required during her reign
in 1484
The youngest of three children
Sylvia graduated from Blu*- Moun
tain Community College last June at
the age of 18 with an associate of arts
in liberal arts She plans to enter
either Oregon State University or a
Washington College, majoring in
technical journalism with emphasis
in animal science

from various saddle makers such as
Joe Snyder. Kenneth Green, Ben
Tarrell. and the laiyd Brothers Jack
and Tom Kinzua began purchasing
the saddle from Ham leys in 1959
the first Hamley s saddle cost $360
and had a roper style horn with a
fancy stamp pattern, a trophy prize
saddle horn, quilted seat and en

says she likes best to write penning
short stories and poems in her spare
time and also serving two years as
the co editor of the BMCC news
paper
Her other interests include draw
ing showing horses from her cous
in s ranch and play ing the tenor and
baritone sax a phone as well as the
clarinet
She played with the jazz concert
and community band» while attend
ing BMCC
Sylvia also works on the ranch,
helping her parents m a n a g e the
horses and animals on the 3.MW
acres, where polled Hereford»,
horses grain and alfalfa hay are
raised

Kinzua was founded in 1927 by F I)

He purchased 50.0UO acres of timber
lands and built his only m ill at
Kinzua. Oregon in 1928
Kinzua Bine Mills Company sold
to its present owners in 1953 and was
renamed Kinzua Corporation The
logging operations became known as
Fastcrn Oregon l/igging Company
Heppner Bine Mills in Heppner
which was built in 1939 and owned by
Orville Smith. Bhil Mahoney and
the K raft Cheese Company sold to
Morris Hitchcock in 1956 and to
Kinzua Corporation in 1959 Kinzua
Corporation further acquired the
Heppner 1 .umber Company in 1971
which had stud mills in Heppner and
Spray
In 1976. because it was no longer
economically feasible to maintain
the company town at Kinzua. it was
decided to consolidate the com
pany’i operations in Heppner where
a completely computerize*! sawmill
was built in 197H followed by the
addition of a small log m ill in 1981
and a whole log chipper in 1982 The
Corporation is currently building a
co generation plant "We are in the
process of utilizing all of the forest
products and farming the forest of
slash, cull. thin, and merchantable

Heppner City Council hears
Main St. courtship
caiLses problems
A mimture stud horse wanting to
get together with a full size mare is
causing problems between neigh
hors on Main street in Heppner. the
city council was told last week
Irene Anhorn. who lives at 560
Main, said a neighbor has fenced in
property across from her yard
where the miniature horse is kept,
and is running a horse there "The
mare comes down in front of my
house and belters," she told the
council, and "w ell it's causing prob
lems."
She said her stud horse got out.
“ and I ’ll tell you it was pretty
ridiculous "
Anhorn said she wanted the city to
do something bec ause the horse is on
city property
"We've had a number of animal
complaints, and it may be we are
going to have to do some rethinking
on animal permits within the city
lim its.' Mayor C liff Green said
“ You're talking ahout chickens,
ducks, rabbits, etc that's one thing,
but stud horses and mares are
different ”
