Couple celebrates 50th

Dolores i Mills i and Lowell Gribble will celebrate their SOth wedding
anniversary at an open house st the Heppner Elks Club from 7 to 10 p m
Friday. Aug 10
They were married December 31. 1934 and moved to the Pendleton area 10
years later where Lowell worked as a sales representative for a gasoline
company and operated a service station
In 1952 they moved to Heppner where I>owell became the coowner with
le n Halderson from Condom in the Inlan d Chemical service The (inbbli
remained in Heppner for over 25 years
The dribbles are presently retired and spend their summers in Salem and
winters at Indio. California
Their three children. Douglas of Centralia. Washington. Stuart of
Issaquah. Washington and Barbara Derrick of Pendleton and mx
grandchildren invite all their friends to the anniversary celebration They
request no gifts

Country Club became very involved in competitions at home and elsewhere
The State Marine Board meeting in Portland was of great interest to south
county residents who are eager to see the lake behind Willow Creek Dam
developed to its full recreational potential Further consideration and publn
input was deemed wise and the final action concerning the use of the
reservoir will be announced later
The few townspeople who visited with Rosel and Armand I-aPalme. who
came to Heppner because her granduncle was Henry Heppner after whom
the town is named, found this Massachusetts couple very pleasing and
interesting and delighted with this town
The 20-year reunions celebrated by the Heppner High classes of 1964. I962>
and I960 kept the arrangement committee members and all who attended
the three days of activities and many local grandparents who got in some
extra child care mighty busy I enjoyed having the W W Weatherford I II
foursome plus their Basset Hound, their Keeshound and their black cat with
me for 14 days However, after they all departed on Sunday. July 22 I found
I was tired and that the quiet house and yard promoted better resting

Maybe not too many readers have noted the change in the format of this
now lObyrar old newspaper The overall paper is smaller now and has
dropped from eight columns to only six. although the columns are a bit
wider This change brings the paper in line with those published by other
members of the National Newspaper Association and the Oregon Newspaper
Publishers Association
How good it is to learn that the Morrow County Courthouse may receive
national recognition This 1902 structure was carefully built from stone
quarried on nearby Halm Fork It is certainly a big plus for the county that
the building has had such good care and maintainance during its years Now
we are noting a change in its landscaping with the planting of low shrubbery
along its sloping front lawn
For several weeks I have been hearing that there was an urgent need for
citizens to file for the postitions available on the Heppner City Council and
for the office of the city's mayor Although I have never thought I might
aspire to public office. I did some investigating and picked up a ropy of the
city charter and of a nominating petition, with the idea that I would study the
situation Now. I have been informed that one of the newer council members
is actively working toward becoming mayor and that a recently retired
Heppner High School teacher may be filing Since these persons are both
capable. I probably will not file, but I am satisfied that I have learned a little
more about the operation of our city’s government
During these last several weeks I have been thinking about possible ways
to improve Heppner. and I ’ve arrived at the one thing I feel is basic the
stimulation of civic pride in each citizen I am hoping that all residents will
clean up. fix up and really beautify their dwellings and yards and will begin
to feel justifiable pride m this city which is a very good, sharing and caring
place to live for children, for families and for older citizens, too
This month. August, is County Fair Month Fine groups of volunteers are
hard at work implementing plans for a best-ever fair They are striving to
make this county-centennial-year fair more appealing to more folks than
former fairs We hope these leaders will achieve, with citizen help, a more
beautiful, more interesting, better attended fair than usual Let's all plan to
enjoy the parade and rodeo events, too And let's make visitors feel our
pride in our city and in our 100-year-old county

warm days of July As I write, many acres of wheat are being harvested
Many truck loads of logs are rolling down Heppner s Main Street to the
Kinzua Mill During the last month a few human animals began life and a
few ended their days here
Very soon after July 4th celebrations. Heppner merchants held a Saturday
Market Although there were many bargains displayed that hot das the
buyers seemed rather apathetic Maybe a little lively music was needed to
pep up the quiet affair
New School Superintendent Doyle McCaslin took over from Malt Itoherty
