fields are mature enough to

this disease
Fields with wheat that is
still green and with wheat
kernels still soft, especially
under irrigation, could ho sev
erely damaged
Chemical treatment is a
vailahle However, the ex
ports agree that there is not
nearly enough knowledge on
the chemical control of this
disease
Stem rust appears as dark
reddish hrown spots on the
leaves, stems, and heads of
cereal plants The spots are
generally long and oval shap
ed with pointed ends When
infection is severe the spots
can almost completely cover
the leaves and circle the stein
laite m the season, the areas
of rust turn black The disease
causes the plant to lose moist
ure. resulting in shriveled
gram and lower y ields Yield
losses can tie in excess of 20
percent in late m aturing
crops Black stem rust docs
well in warm weather and is
encouraged by late maturity
Stem rust first became a
problem in Faslern Oregon
wheat fields last year

introduction of officers These
youngsters were as young as

did a fantastic job in the
opening and closing of the
grange Friday afternoon w as
the installation of officers for
the next 2 years with Morton
Wolverton. a member of Col
