-H CAKE BAKING CONTEST FOR INTERMEDIATES AND SENIORS
PREMIUMS

Open to all Intermediate tnd Senior 4 H Foods Members.
Each contestant mul use the same two-egg yellow cake recipe printed below.
Contestant! must prepare cake at assigned time under supervision of Judge.
Pre-register to participate.
Contestants bring all Ingredienti and supplies needed to prepare cake. (Ovens
provided).
Use ingredients listed for recipe making no substitutions, additions or deletions.
No frosting or glaze is to be used on contest cake.
County contest only.
TWO EGG YELLOW CAKE
3 cups cake flour
14 cups sugar
14 cups milk
cup shortening
2 eggs
24 tap. double-acting baking powder
I tup. salt
m Up. vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour one 13" by 9" baking pan. Into
large bowl, measure all ingredients; with mixer at low speed, beat until well mixed,
constantly scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Beat at medium speed 4 min.,
occasionally scraping bowl. Pour batter into pans and bake round layers 30 to 35
minutes, or 13 x " cake for 40 to 45 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes
out clean. Cool cake in pans. Cake may be left in pans. Makes 2 layers or 1 cake.
SCORING
Each of the three groupings below will account for one-third of the total score. Each
participant will visit with judge after the mini-meal is prepared and served.
1. Preparation skills (measuring, mixing-assembling, cooking, and baking
procedures).
2. Management (efficient use of equipment and work space, tasks done in efficient
sequence)
3. Work habits (cleanliness, neatness, sanitation, safety).

Decorating only to be Judged. Member may prepare and decorate cake at home.
Enter at the same time as other food exhibits. Judging will be on decorating skills,
accurac y , color combinations, smoothness of techniques, design, balance. Decorating
may be on cake forms or cakes.
BASIC CAKE DECORATING (beginners) those who have taken 1 series of cake
decorating lessons.

one arUele they ha ve made. The purpose of a club display is to show what the club has
done in the total project. Samples of different articles made, some pictures of fun
friends, and stories of the project may be included.

An exhibit consists of an article made for the home. Include an explanation to tell
the fair audience what the article is, how it was made, and how it will be used in the
home, Explanations must be complete and accompany the article to qualify for
judging.
If a member's work cannot be brought to the fair (example a remodeled bedroom ) a
member may exhibit an explanation of his-her work which shows and tells what
he-she has done.

DIVISION 4-H LEATKERCRAFT
PREMIUMS Blue-MM. Red - I3.M. White - I2.M
Only one article or pair of article is exhibited. Refer to member's guide, 4-H
Leathercraft Project 4-H 750, for detailed information.
Members are to enter exhibits in the class as identified by skill demonstrated.
Exhibits will be judged on the skills outlined in the following classes. If exhibits
entered in the class contain additional demonstrated skills, the skill will be evaluated,
extra credit will not be given but will be counted against the exhibit if not done
properly.
LOT
7512 Use of Basic Tool Set, exhibits which demonstrate basic leather tools.
7513 Edging and, at least double style lacing, assembly of small articles or
two-part projects.
7514 Apply hardware and assembly, more advanced assembly techniques to
include one of the following: folding, skiving, molding, lining.
7515 Background dyeing or figure carving, on more difficult article.
7616 Filigreeing and -or embossing, more detail assembly.
7517 Show at least one new, advanced technique, such as hand sewing, designing
own pattern, cutting project from hide.
7518 A major article, showing considerable advanced techniques and ability to
handle a large project.
7519 Other techniques, may include pyrography (burning), freehand stamping,
silhouette, inverted carving, etc.

DIVISION 2 41 DECORATIVE PAINTING

Members may exhibit in one class only. (Refer to the Decorative Painting Leaders
guide. 4-H 712, for detailed information.) When two articles make up an exhibit, the
articles must each be labeled with name, address and class number of exhibitor and
attached to each other.

7122 Old Tole Designs, article using old tole designs
7133 Fruits, article showing fruit
7124 Advanced Flowers, article showing flower(s)
7125 People and Animals, article showing person or animal
7126 Vegetables, article showing vegetable(s)
7127 Original Designs, using member's own pattern and previously learned skills.
Submit design with the article.
7128 New Ideas in Creative Decorating, could be anything different, such as
painting on fabric, glass, gold leafing, stenciling, etc.
