Jackie Paplneau has been
named Resident of the Month
for June, announced Pioneer.
Memorial Hospital Nursing
Home.
She was born April 21. 1917,
since her father followed the
rodeo circuit, she travled to
most cities in the U.S. and
Canada.
Jackie recalls that she mar
ried Freddie Papineau Sept
ember 15, 1946. She continued
to follow the rodeo circuit until
the birth of their son, Keith.
After Keith was born, her
husband quit the rodeo and
became a log truck driver.
Now a widow, Jackie has
been a resident at Pioneer
Memorial Nursing Home for
three years.
The lone Lions Club held its
last regularly scheduled meet
ing of the year, Tuesday even
ing at Beecher's Kestaurant in
lone and held installation of
the 1984-85 club officers said a
spokesperson for the club.

June 9 at the Palmateers
home.
In other regular business,
the club voted to donate $50.00
to the Lion's Sight and Hear
ing Foundation, increasing
their annual gift from last
year by 100 percent.
Bill Broderick of lone and
his wife Laura, visited the
club and discussed the need
for local service club support
of the annual Morrow County
Fair and Rodeo to be held at
Heppner in August. The club
was enthusiastic in its respon
se to support the Fair Board in
this years' planning and co
ordination of the ticket-taking
and parking aspects of the
fair.
The 100th Anniversary of
Morrow County and lone, was
discussed and several sugges
tions of possible community
activities to celebrate the cen
tennial were offered. The club
voted to consider the possibili
ties over the summer and let
the new administration make
definite plans in the fall.
Door-prize tickets which
were handed out at the begin
ning of the evening and drawn
for throughout the meeting
were won by: Don Bristow,
Gale Grey, Laura Broderick,
Terri Palmateer, Jeff West,

July 4 through 7.

lege in Portland. She placed
fifth in Intermediate Girls Jav
elin with a throw of 119 ft. 10
inches which qualified her to
compete at the Regional Jr.
Olympics at Mt. Hood Com
munity College on June 30 and
July 1.
The regional meet will in
clude several northwestern
states. There were 15 girls in
Deena's age group competing
in the javelin event at the state
meet.

the summer term jchedule of

The Heppner ABE classes
are coordinated by Joy Krein,

taught in the Neighborhood
Center at 178 Willow St. on
Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m. and
Wednesdays, from 7 to 10 p.m.

and, after dark, a fireworks

Over the next three days,
the activities include some
thing for everyone including
an Indian Encampment, Muz
zle loaders. Buffalo Chip Toss,
a Liars' Contest, Spelling Bee,
Perch Jerk, Quick drawers
and a Bank Hold-up. If that
isn't enough, try the on going
Chautauqua, the Squuredanc
infif, the Historical Home and
Farm Tours, or a run in the
Rendezvous Mile. There will
be lots of music, craft and food
booths, Old Time Industrial
Displays, Bonfires, a Saloon
Crawl and two Street Dances.
Additional activities just for
the kids are games and con
tests and a Youth Barn Dance.
Each evening there will be a
performance of "Special Edi
tion III." an original musical
play based on Pendleton's
proud 104 year history. Satur
day afternoon will highlight
the Cowboy Tour guaranteed
to be full of lying, fiddling,
singing, and storytelling.
