Above average crop
predicted
Construction continues at
co-generation plant
The Heppner Gazette-Time, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, June H, IBM-THREE
Crop prospect look good for
this year's harvest because we
have had good amounts of
moisture end are having ideal
weather now while the wheat
heads arc filling out, said
Larry Mills of Morrow County
Grain Growers. This year's
crop will probably be as good
as last year's, and, in some
areas, maybe even better. It
will be an above-average crop,
Mills predicts that there will
be adequate storage In the
area to handle the crop, al
though we will be going into
harvest with storage already
at 75 percent capacity because
low wheat prices caused the
big carry over from last
year's crop on both the Farm
er Held Reserve and Regular
Loan Program.
Mills says that even with
that much carryover, storage
needs will be met with the use
of extensive outside covered
storage. He explains that the
grain is placed on the ground
and covered with a heavy
plastic which is anchored with
old tires. An aeration system
accomplished by two fans, one
at either end of the pile keeps
air circulating through the
wheat which helps to keep the
cover down and also to keep
the grain cool and in condition.

The first building to be constructed in the co-generation
plant facility houses the condenser and the turbine for the
plant. The condensor (center) must be on a cement
foundation for stability.

Several different crews
have been working together
but in different aspects of
building the co-generation
plant at Kinzua Corp. in Hep
pner. General Electric is the
main contractor of the pro
ject. The projected completion
date is December 1, said
LaVerne VanMarter of Kin
zua. At that time, the plant is
expected to be "on line and
producing power."
The plant is expected to
employ approximately 10 peo
ple at the site, continued Van
Marter, with the greatest vol
ume of people employed in the
woods, gathering slash and
thinning crews and truck haulers.
So far, materials have been
available and work has gone
smoothly and on schedule.
The weather has been a "prob
lem at times, but you can't do
anything about that," conclud
ed VanMarter.
