By MARLENECURRIN,
Publicity Chairman
Morrow Co. CowBelles
An Interesting article ap
peared recently in the "Ore
gon Cattleman Magazine,"
entitled "Cow Keggers Reap
Profit."
Call it what you will ...
tewed beef, potted meat.
But Angus cattle that con
sume massive quantities of
Hicneken beer every day pro
vide some of the leanest ten
derest steaks and roasts avail
able in the USA, insists cattle
man Fred Grant.
Although Grant won't say
how much beer each of his
1,800 head of cattle drinka, he
dues claim to be one of the
major purchasers of Heineken
In the USA (Heineken con- 1
firms this). But, assures
James Gibbons, one of Grant's
employees, the beer (mixed
with more traditional feed)
allotted is not so great as to
leave the critters reeling in
the fields.
Actually, beer Is only one
element in the formula Grant
uses on his Vermont farm (he
refuses to disclose the exact
location) to produce the low
fat, yet tender meat he calls
Brae Beef, named after his
Windabrae Farm in Fairfield
County, Conn., where he con
ducted research for eight
years before settling on the
current program. What
makes his cows special is
combining a version of the
grass grazing methods used
by the Argentinians and the
beer-feeding used by the Jap
anese. The cattle are fed natural
foodstuffs, and when they
reach drinking age receive
their daily Heineken (chosen
for its "nutritional benefits,"
he says) and "at no time
receive antibiotics or hormon
al stimulants." The cattle are
raised for two to three years to
a weight of up to 3,000 pounds
before slaughter.
"What is different is his
;j management system." says
Ken Johnson, vice president of
meat science for the National
Live Stock and Meat Board in
Chicago, who knows of no
similar beef being raised in
'the USA.
"Most cattle are raised for
16 to 18 months to a weight of
about 1,500 pounds on a high
energy diet of corn, since
raisers want to get the max
imum growth in the shortest
period of time."
The beef is sold at Grant's
Brae Beef Shop in Stamford
Conn. Prices range from $1.90
a pound for the lowest of four
chopped beef grades to $16.45
a pound for filet mignon. His
prices are significantly higher
than for usual cuts, which list
for $1.42 for ground beef, for
example.
