The Fifth Quarter Sports by Mike Oths S WTA CLAI S INDUSTRIES NORTH POLE May 17. 184 attn: Sports Department Dear Santa: .1 am writing early this year so you won't yeU at me. Realizing this is the slow season, you might have time to work on some presents for next year. Believe me. some of this w list will take some time. I would like the following presents this year (note: not all are for me): ..Aw inter without Dick Yitale. As much as I loved you at U. of Detroit. Dick, you're too hyperactive for home entertain ment. Plus. I don't want to know any more about Michael Jordan. Dic k's saying: "Hey Mikey, wait a minute, I'm a superstar, you can't do this to me. I coached in the NBA Mikey." Please Santa, if nothing else. . I or George Sleinbrenner to get an offer he can't refuse for the Yankees. Not that I like the Bronx Bombers. Santa, but e en I feel bad for Yogi. George can't understand why the t anks aren't in first. I mean Detroit is only 26-4. . For Larry Bird to win the MVP balloting (this may be taken i are of for you before next Christmas). Bird fan or ot, this ru is one of the best ever-even if he does complain about every call. ..-For a scenic burial plot for the N.I.T. With the NCAA basketball tournament expanding again, the once-proud N.I.T. is probably going down for the third time. Please buy a big enough spot to bury the red-white-and-blue basketballs forever, then at least some good will come from it. -I'lease bring a Cy Young award for Mario Soto of the Reds. If ever a pitcher had a right to curse his luck in being born It v ears too late, it's Mario. If he had started a career with the Keds in 1970, They'd just have him pitch his games in CooiM-rstown to save time. -I'lease bring a full supply of heart pills for Stu Inman and the rest of the Trailb'.azers staff. If the "early-contact-with-()lajuwon-maybe-we'll-take-your-draft-pick-away"taJk hasn't w eakened their tickers, then they'll probably live to be loo. While you're at it, you might throw them a bonus and let them know who cooked up that story for the NBA. -While you're at it, how about some of these, too? Another major championship for Jack Nicklaus; A winning season for the Cleveland Indians ; a tennis player (female) who can give Martina Navratilova a match; more recognition for Major Indoor Soccer; and how about somebody to make a run at a Triple Crow n in baseball? Well Santa, see what you can do. You already let me down once i Oh No? What about the modet train set when I was 10? i. so I'll expect to see these in my stocking next winter. Have a good summer and remember what I told you about keeping your left arm straight. Take care. Your pal, Mike TIMEX . .
