The 28-chartcr-mem-ber organization was sponsor ed by the lone Lions and headed by President Cliff Green. "Five Heppner youths, returning from the Arlington Rodeo Saturday night, nar rowly escaped death when their two cars collided at milepost 140, four miles east of Arlington at 9:05 p.m." report ed a front page story in the Gazette-Times. Luke Padberg was hospitalized for neck in juries at Good Shepherd Hospital, Hermlston following the accident. 25 Vein Ago Thursday, May 7, 1959 The Bank of Eastern Oregon received approval from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Washington, D C. for establishment of a branch bank at lone. Gene Pierce, manager of the Hep pner branch of the bank was to manage the lone project which It was hoped would be open by June 20. County Extension Agent N.C. Anderson reprted that a general meeting had been held to form a county rural fire control organization. The Heppner City Council received a request for ad- ditonal water and pressure to property on the Condon Hwy. near the city. The council had been preparing for the renew al of the city's main feeder line because the current grav ity system did not adequately supply water to all areas of the city. SO Years Ago Thursday, May 10, 1934 Elaine Furlong, manager of the StarTheater announced its opening for the first time with a new silver screen and new sound equipment which had been installed during a five-day closure. James 11. Williams resigned as Superintendent of Lexing ton schools to accept a position with Santa Monica Junior Col lege in California. "Drilling operations were started back of the courthouse this week on action of the county court to provide water for fire prevention. The court has the promise of a material reduction in its fire insurance bill if sufficient water is pro vided to give the courthouse protection during the dry sea- -son when pressure from the city mains is insufficient to give adequate protection," stated a story on the front puge of the May 10, 1934 Gazette-Times. Registration is 14 with a T-shirt before May 1 and $10 after May 1. Without a T-shirt, registration is $5 before May IS and $6 after May 15. The course is 13 2 miles along natural and asphalt sur faces. Handcrafted plaques will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers, with ribbons for the fourth and fifth place finishers in each divi sion. All who finish within the three-hour time limit will receive certificates. Additional awards will be given to the youngest runner, the oldest runner, and the first three Wheeler county resident runners. Approximately 100 additional prizes will be a warded by drawings. The lone boys track team won their sixth straight Big Sky Conference track meet at Condon on Saturday, May 5 with 182 points. Dufur won the girls with 112 points, while the lone girls finished fifth with 41 points. Randy McCabe led the boys with three firsts and a second. He won the high jump (six feet), the pole vault (nine feet, and the discus (114'3 V), plus triple jumping (39'4'.y') for second. The girls were led by Deena Hams. She won the discus at 85'3" and the 300 meter hurdles in 1 :06.5. She earned third throwing the javelin and running the 400 meters in 1:19 8. Craig Hams won the long jump leaping 21'6" and the triple jump leaping 4011". He ran for fifth in the 100 meters at : 1 1 .9 a nd for third in the 200 meters at :23.9 Distance runner Mike Doug las won the 1500 and 3000 meters. He ran 4:39.0 and 10:19 0 respectively. He was on the second place 440 yard relay team of Jerry Anderson, Rod Taylor, and Donnie Doherty. He teamed with Ash ley Conklin, Brian Douglas, and Eric Cook who got second in the mile relay at 4:24.3. Shot putter Donnie Doherty heaved 4f4V for first. He also hurled the discus 87'3". Jumper Howard Leavitt was fourth in the high jump, and fifth in the long jump. He jumped 5'8" and 18''V re spectively. Anderson ran 2:22.8 in the 800 for third and Cook place fifth in 2:25.5. Anderson also was second at 3000 meters clocking 10:55.7. Hurdlers Chris Rea ran . : 17.7 and Brian Douglas ran :17.9 for the high hurdles, placing second and third re spectively. Douglas showed :46.4 for the intermediates which was second, plus run ning the 100 in : 12.5. Rea ran :26.3 in the 200 and tossed the javelin 938". Candi Rudisill was second in the high jump and was sixth in the 100 at : 14.5 She also long jumped. Thrower Scot Barnett heav ed the shot 3r7V the discus 99' V for fourth and the javel- photo by Woyn Ham in 125'3" for third. He also pole vaulted eight feet for a second place. Another thrower, Rod Tay lor, put the shot 33'4'4" for fourth, plus throwing 95'6" in the javelin. Ashley Conklin long jumped 164", triple jumped 32'10", sixth and ran :28.1 for 200 meters. The District 7-A Track Meet is in Umatilla on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12. Events begin at 3 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday. Those who place first or second, or meet state qualify ing standards will participate in the state meet a week later. Boys team scores: lone 182, Helix 107',. Arlington 90',. The congrega tion thanks all who came to the sale, bought lunch and baked goods and were helpful in many ways. The 1963 station wagon con tributed by Charles Stark was bought by Charles Mc Connell. The work experience fulfills one of the graduation require ments for the Bachelor of Science degree in Agri-Business which Rick will receive from Eastern Oregon State College in June.
