Question: "Do you feel the
Corps of Engineers or the city
of Heppner is responsible for
erecting a fence in Hager
Park?"
"I think that since it is in
Heppner that the city should
probably be responsible for
it," said Becky Smith of Hep

"Red Meat The Original
Health Food" is the title of the
most recent literary effort of
Heather Thomas, author and
Idaho ranchwife. Thomas also
wrote the expose on wild
horses a couple of years ago
which resulted in personal
threats and Intimidation. She
has also recently written a
book about predator control.
The book is well written and
the Morrow County CowBelles
suggest that you purchase
one. The book is available for
$3.50 from the Record Stock
man Press, 103 Livestock
Exchange Building, Denver,
Colorado 80216.
Baxter Black, D.V.M. a not
ed veterinarian, livestock
health columnist and cowboy
humorist did the foreword for
Heather Thomas's book, "Red
Meat." It was done with a lot
of thought and humor too.
Something to share with you:
"Man crawled his way up
the evolutionary ladder plodd
ing along at a dinosaur pace.
Eventually he learned to use
his hands. He became a hunt
er. In a single four ounce
serving of baboon brain or
mastodon liver he received
more high quality nutrients
than he could get in a week of
digging roots, cracking nuts
and eating cattails. Man un
derwent a development un
heard of in Darwins chron
icles; his brain more than
doubled in size in a short
million years."
Here we sit in the last
quarter of the 20th century.
American citizens have thriv
ed on freedom and meat and
potatoes. We have increased
our life span dramatically.
Deaths due to heart disease,
malnutrition, infectious dis
ease, and most forms of can
cer have decreased in incid
ence. Yet, there are lobbyists
on every street cornor with a
bottle of vitamin pills in one
hand and their new diet book
in the other, stridently inform
ing anyone who'll listen, that
we Americans don't eat right !
A common whipping boy for
most of these pseudo-nutritionists
has been red meat.

Heather Thomas listened to
this barrage of misinforma
tion and took it upon herself to
check the facta. This book will
not appeal to folks who have
made a living espousing no
meat diets. It will, however,
be of interest to those doctors,
housewives, nutritionists,
mothers, teachers and inno
cent bystanders who wish to
separate fact from fiction.
It is very thorough, support
ed by an extensive biblio
graphy and contain large
measure of common sense.
