Jackie Gentry Ueft), manager of Western Heritage

Western Heritage in the open house celebration of their 50th
anniversary. Brownfield's name was drawn last Friday,
April 6.

Heppner merchants met at
Kate's Pizza and Pastry for a
regular meeting of the Mer
chants' Committee at noon
last Friday, April 6.
Bill Hutchinson, president of
the committee, announced
that the Chamber of Com
merce had voted to budget
$1,600 to the merchants com
mittee to help finance its
projects. He continued that
the Chamber had also expres
sed a desire for more mer
chants to become active mem
bers of that organization rath
er than just the merchants
committee, but emphasized
that the funds had already
been budgeted and were not
dependent on their decision.

working on some special
projects in honor of National
Library Book Week, April 8-14
announced school librarian,
Betty Carlson.
The classes are decorating
their classroom doors and
some children are bringing
stuffed bears to school this
week as a reminder to Be
Eager About Reading
B.E.A.R.).
The kindergarten through
third grade classes are also
coloring pictures of bears
which each student will indi
vidualize with the name of an
emotion or personality trait.
The fourth, fifth and sixth
grades have worked a cross
word puzzle using the library
card catalog file to find the
titles of books about bears and
the names of authors who
wrote bear books.
Carlson says that Thursday,
April 12 will be a special
"Read Out" day when stu
dents will stop their regular
class work and begin to read
each time the special message
about bears is transmitted
over the intercom.

nis teams 4-2 on Saturday,
April 7, at Arlington.
In first singles Mark Meyers
lost, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 to Buddy
Ozment. Eric Pointer was
victorious, defeating Troy
Wheelhouse 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
The boys doubles team of
