Cathy Lindsay wins essay contest St. Patrick's Day Supplement to the Heppner Gaietto-Titnet FIVE '.. ? j f - 'i w Cathy Lindsay Cathy Lindsay of Lexington, a Heppner High School senior, has won an essay contest sponsored by the Heppner St. Patrick's Day Celebration Committee. The contest was open to all Morrow County students. As the first place winner, Lindsay will receive a M5 cash award and her essay is being published in the Gazette Times and in the Enterprise. Betty llodson of Riverside High School in Boardman, who won second place, will receive a 125 award. Christy Kathbun of HHS won third place and will be awarded f 15. Judges for the contest were John Edmundson, Bob Abrams, Lib Daggett and Martha Doherty. Following is Lindsay's win ning essay: Irish Immigration To Morrow County By MARY CATHERINE LINDSAY The lyrics of the song des cribing the plaque of Ireland ... immigration... They left the mountains and the glens, The lassies and the fine young men. I saw a tear on every girl and boy. Many young men of twenty said good bye. tell the poignant story of Ire land's loss and Morrow Coun ty's gain. They came to this country 100 years ago, leaving family and friends behind, hoping to find a better life. With large families on small farms, the future looked bleak for many young people in Ireland. Eng lish rule made life difficult for the Irish. The Irish economy was an agricultural economy. Yet, the Irish could own only the poorest land. The good land was confiscated for the English lords. It was even unlawful for an Irishman to own a horse for many cen turies. He could use a mule, but the horses belonged only to the English. Then came the years when the potato crops failed, a main stay in Irish diets, to add to their troubles land drive even more young people away in search of a living. Cousins, aunts and uncles who had gone before them to Oregon sent money for pas sage and the invitation for them to come. The prospect of land to homestead and the hope of establishing a home where they could raise their ownf amilies, gave them the courage to endure the hard- Variety of goodies to be for sale- A variety of goodies will be available for purchase this Saturday during Heppner's St. Patrick's Day Celebration. My Great Grandfather, Bernard P. Doherty, left County Donnegal, Ireland in 1885 under such circumstan ces to arrive in Boston. He worked there until he earned his passage west to Oreogn. He went to work as a herder for Cunningham Sheep, taking his wages in sheep until he was able to homestead in Morrow County. Here, he worked diligently with his flock and the Good Lord blessed his efforts with suc cess, lambing in Sand Hollow and trailing up to Lahman Springs in The Blues for the summer. Stories told to me by my Grandma Rosella of the jolly times, the experiences of the newly-landed "Greenhorns," and all the busy activities of the sheep business are favo rites with me. Catherine Doherty, born in Carndonagh, County Donne gal, left home and the green hills of Ireland at 16 to land at the dry dusty hills of Hog Hollow on Franklin Hill in Morrow County. She worked as a cook and domestic helper, activities of newly arrived Irish in this land. Barney (Bernard P.) and Katie (Catherine) met as part of the Irish and were joined in the Sacrament of Matrimony in 1895 and began the intrigu ing story of lives that would give new lives to enrich Mor row County.
