Heppner v Sherman Co.
The Heppner varsity Fillies
traveled to Pendleton last
Thursday, Feb. 23, to play
their first game in the district
tournament. The Fillies com
peted against the Sherman
County Huskies The game
was held at the Pendleton
Armory.
The Heppner Fillies came
out of the locker room fired up
and ready to play. The crowd
showed inspiration for tht Fil
lies as the tip went up to start
the game. After three at
tempts at the tip off the Fillies
finally came down with the
ball.
Heppner brought the ball
down court, set it up and ran
through the plays. Both teams
were playing very good de
fense. The Sherman Huskies
were surprised at Heppner's
ability to keep them from
scoring. Heppner scored the
first two points of the quarter
with only four minutes and 26
seconds remaining.
The Fillies continued to play
tough defense but their offense
wasn't working very well. The
Fillies were very patient but
just weren't aggressive
enough and the first two points
the Fillies scored were also
the only two points they scored
in the first quarter. Sherman
County, however, scored nine
points as the quarter ended.
The Fiiiies calne out a little
discouraged to start the
second quarter but that didn't
last long as they were back in
the game fighting hard. The
ball was tossed up to start the
second quarter and the Hus
kies came down with it. The
Fillies hustled back to play
tough defense. The Huskies
were really hurting Heppner
on the boards. They blocked
out tough and came down with
a few more rebounds in both
the first and second quarters.
Heppner's defense was still
tough throughout the quarter.

shot against Huskies.
As the Huskies tried to pass
inside, the Fillies blocked the
passing lanes and forced the
Huskies to shoot from outside
the key. The Fillies were down
by seven points with about 50
seconds left. The Huskies had
possession of the ball. A so
phomore came down court,
after stealing the ball and
went for two points to put the
Fillies down by only five
points. The second quarter
ended with the Huskies only
scoring nine points and the
Fillies scoring 11. The quarter
score was 13-18.
The Heppner team was
disappointed. Coach Mike
Rover did his best to encou
rage the team. He told the
Fillies what they had done
wrong and what they had to
do. Heppner came back out for
their half time warm up ready
to go again.
Once again the Huskies re
ceived the tip off and started
the third quarter. Heppner
was back on defense holding
the Huskies from scoring. The
Fillies were getting more re
bounds in this quarter but
were hurting because of fouls.
Heppner was more aggressive
on offense but couldn't find
enough open shots at the buc
ket. As the third quarter ended
the Fillies only scored seven
points while the Huskies
scored 13 to put the score at
19-31.
The lourth quarter started
with the tip off going to the
Fillies. They took the ball
down court and set up their
offense. The Fillies really
started to make a comeback
towards the middle of the
fourth quarter. Heppner star
ted getting more offensive
rebounds as they put the ball
right back up for two. Heppner
made a good effort but the
Huskies had scored too many

forced the Fillies to foul the
Huskies so they'd have a
chance to rebound and take
possession of the ball. Unfor
tunately, Sherman County
was putting free throws
through the hoop and theire
score continued to go up. By
the end of the fourth quarter
the Huskies were on top 48-35.
Both teams scored 14 field
goals but the Huskies scored
20 out of 35 freee throws. The
Fillies scored 7 out of 14.
The Heppner Fillies had three
of their players foul out of the
game.
"Sherman County is one of
the best class A teams in the
state and 1 thought we played
them very tough. Overall I
was very pleased with the
girls' performance," said
Coach Royer.
The Fillies did play a great
game.
"This was the closest game
we have played all season,"
commented one of the Sher

Jodi Padberg led Heppner
with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Pam Orr had two steals while

The Fillies traveled to Pen

last chance to continue to the

they wanted to go on to re

They took the ball all the way
down the court for two points.
The Fillies hustled back down
court to play tough defense.
Heppner was really hustling.
As the Eagles tried to pass the
ball inside the key Heppner's
defense moved with all hands
up. The Eagles had no place to
go with the ball. The score was
dose as the quarter ended.
Wahtonka was in the lead
11-10.
The second quarter started
as the Eagles grabbed the tip
off. The Heppner Fillies were
really playing tough defense.
They were hustling well and
kept it up throughout the
quarter. The Fillies scored a
free throw which was the first
point of the quarter. This tied
up the score. The first field
goal of the quarter was scored
with five minutes and 57 se
conds left, which put Heppner
in the lead at 13-11 ith four
minutes and six seconds left,
the Eagles scored to take the
lead. Then again with three
minutes and 45 seconds left
the Fillies scored again to pull
ahead. Then only seconds la
ter, the Eagles scored again to
put the score at 17-18. Within
about two minutes the lead
had changed four times. With

put the Eagles ahead with the
quarter ending at 21 24.
The Fillies had two of their
starters in foul trouble in the
first half, which put them on
the bench.
For the third quarter Hep

ready to play. The Fillies had
their five starters back on the
court. The tip off went to the
Eagles. Heppner started out
the quarter with good hustling
and really went after the ball.
As the quarter continued the
lead was tossed back and forth
between the two teams but
Wahtonka was in the lead at
the end of the quarter. 39-38.
The fourth quarter started
with the tip off going to the
Fillies. As the game went on
Heppner was grabbing down
many rebounds. With five
minutes and six seconds left in
the quarter, starter Stephi

As the quarter continued the
score stayed close but with

another starter, Pam Orr,
fouled out.
The F'illies were a little
discouraged but with the en

teammates Heppner went
back in after a time out to
finish the game. The Fillies
fought hard to the end, but
with a few too many steals
from Wahtonka player Kim
Phillips, Heppner couldn't
take the lead. With only
seconds left in the game
Wahtonka carried the ball
down court. The only thing
Heppner could do was foul. As
they tried to do that, they
couldn't get the refs to call
anything on them so Wahton
