Weston McEwen rips Heppner for 2nd time this season

Remember the thrashing
the Heppner Mustangs took
from the Weston McEwen
TigerScot the first time tbey
played (80-35). Well a second
match between the two teams
last Friday wasn't as bad as
the first one, but the results
were the same.
In a good defensive effort
by Weston McEwen, the Tiger
Scots shut down Heppner and
maintained their number
three ranking in state with a
55-32 victory.
Actually, Heppner surprised
W-M in the first quarter.
Heppner was only down 6-2 at
the end of one.
"We felt the only chance we
had was to play a slow paced
game, make them play our
tempo," said Coach Brent
Eggers.
But Weston decided to play
serious ball and score some
points in the second quarter.
Led by 6'6" all-league Center
Hokan Bjoin's tough play in
side, Weston led 20-8 at half
time. The Tiger Scots doubled
the number of points they had
in the first half and were
comfortably ahead at the end
of three 4014. Weston
McEwen went on to take their
eighth victory against one
loss.
Field goal shooting didnt
help the Mustang's cause.
They were a mere S2 percent
shooting, while Weston con
nected on 54 percent. Heppner
also had 28 turnovers, led by
Archie Lucas' 12, and were
out-rebounded badly by the
taller TigerScots.
Top scorers for Heppner
were Mark Way and Archie
Lucas with eight apiece.
Mark Youncs had 12 for
W-M, while Bjorn and Ricky
Scheibner chipped in 10.
The Mustangs play their
final game next Friday at 8
p.m., hosting Pilot Rock.

Wranglers elect new
officers, directors
Fillies remain 1st in league, secure district berth

The Heppner Varsity Fillies
traveled to Stanfield Satur
day, Feb. 11, to play the
Stanfield Tigers. The Fillies,
ranked first in the league,
came out on top 58-47. This win
sends Heppner to the district
playoffs in Pendleton. Hep
pner will meet Sherman Co. at
the Armory on Thursday, Feb.
23, at 7 p.m. to start district
action.
The game started as the bail
was tossed up for the tip off.
Heppner took the ball down
court and in for two points.
Heppner played very well in
the first quarter. The Fillies
were very patient on offense.
They ran through their plays
until there was an open shot,
then they put it up for two.
Back on defense the Fillies
were really hustling. The Fil
lies held the Tigers from
scoring in the first quarter
while Heppner put in 16.
Heppner started the second
quarter and scored the first
two points of the quarter. The
Fillies continued to play all
around good ball. After taking
the ball down court to score,
Heppner hustled back to play
good defense. The Fillies
were still ahead at the end of
the second quarter. The score
was 34-13.
The Heppner team came
back out on the court ready to
play the rest of the game. The
tip off went to Heppner to start
the third quarter. The Fillies
kept control of the game as
they held the Tigers to only
putting in six shots in the third
quarter.
The fourth quarter started
with the tip off going to the
Tigers, Heppner hustled back
on defense. The Tigers started
to make a comeback as the
Fillies slowed down a bit but
Heppner continued to hustle
and went on to win the game.
The final score was 58-47.
Heppner Coach Mike Royer
said the game was, "Probably
our best all around game since
we beat Umatilla at home. We
played tough defense and con
trolled the tempo of the
game,"
Stephi Payne had 14 points
for the Fillies while Pam Orr
and Jodi Padberg had 13. Orr
had 11 rebounds, Payne had 8
assists and Padberg had 5
steals.
The Fillies play their final
league game on Friday Feb.
17, at Heppner. The game
begins at 6 p.m. The Fillies
will be playing the Pilot Rock
Rockets.
The Heppner Wranglers
held n organizational meet
ing last Wednesday at the
fairground's annex building In
Heppner. New officers were
elected and new directors
were installed.
New officers are: President
Gail Papineau, Vice presi
dent Burke O'Brien, Secre
tary - Mary Ann Munkers and
Treasurer Ginger O'Brien.
The club's directors are Tim
Coe, Dick Hoffman, Janet
Greenup, Sherry Kemp and
Ron Cecil.
The Wranglers are In the
process of rebuilding their
arena and it is hoped to have
the project completed by the
first playday on April 8, said a
group spokesperson.
Club support In the form of
volunteer labor, materials or
equipment would be ap
preciated, she said.
Members will be working at
the arena on February 18 and
19 and members are asked to

; The lone girls' basketball
team lost to the Helix Grizzlies
on Friday, Feb. 10. The score
was 47-24.
Helix took an opening period
lead of 14 to 8. N'ikki Lembcke
had six of the Grizzlies points.
The Grizzlies tripled lone's
point to output in the second
quarter to take a 29-13 inter

four to pull within 33 to 18.
Andrus scored eight fourth
quarter points as Helix won 47
to 24.
Deena Hams and Sandi
Wright led lone with nine
points each. Hams and Wright
grabbed 12 and eight rebounds
respectively. Candi Rudisill
passed for three assists and
Wright blocked three shots.
Andrus led all scorers with
18 points. Wagner added 14
points for the Grizzlies.
From the free throw line
lone made 33 percent of their
shots on 6 of 18 shooting. Helix
was 3 of 10 for 30 percent.

on roadless
area study
Umatilla National Forest
Supervisor John E. Lowe an
nounced tha the Roadless
Area Reinventory Study open
house-workshop ended Reb
ruary 7, and that only five
public comments have been
recorded to date.
Lowe also stated that input
on the Roadless Area
Reinventory will continue to
be accepted until such time as
the study results are pub
lished. The public will then
have a minimum of 30 days to
comment on the study results.

The Heppner varsity Fillies
met the Weston McEwen Tig
erScots on Friday, Feb. 10, at
Heppner.
The Fillies received the tip
off to start the game. Heppner
started a little slow as the
TigerScots started to take con
trol. By the end of the first
quarter Weston McEwen was
in the lead with a score of 4-11.
The second quarter started
with the tip off going to the
Fillies. Heppner took the ball
down court to score. The
Fillies weren't playing up to
their ability though. Although
the Fillies did not gain the
lead, they were only behing by
five points at the end of the
second quarter. The score was
20-25.
The TigerScots came out
for the second half of the game
still more determined than the
Fillies. Heppner received the
tip off for the third quarter.
The Fillies were still not giv
ing 100 percent and the Tiger
Scots were still in the lead at
the end of the third quarter
32-38.
The fourth quarter was pro
bably Heppner's best. The
score was within two points
most of the quarter but the
Fillies just didn't want it bad
enough and the Weston Mc
Ewen TigerScots came out on
top with a score of 49-54.
"They outplayed us in every
aspect of the game; the deser
ved to win. I was really
disappointed with our lack of
intensity," said Coach Mike
Royer.
Stephi Payne had 17 points
for the Fillies while Pam Orr
had 15. Lana Reid had 13
rebounds and Payne had 6
assists.

The Heppner JV Fillies met
with Weston McEwen Tiger
Scots on Friday, Feb. 10, at
Heppner.
Heppner received the tip off
to start the first quarter. The
Fillies took the ball down
court but turned it over. Hep
pner hustled back on defense
and held the TigerScots from
scoring. The Fillies had the
first two points of the game.
Heppner started out using a
tough man to man defense and
forced the TigerScots to turn
the ball over. Towards the end
of the first quarter Heppner's
shots wouldn't go in but were
still ahead with a score of 8-6.
The second quarter started
with the tip off going to the
Fillies. Halfway through the
second quarter Weston Mc
Ewen started using a full
court press. Heppner got
through it pretty well but the
Fillies weren't getting any
rebounds. The score was close
but the Fillies were on top at
the end of the second quarter
with a score of 17-16.
The third quarter started
with the tip off going to the
Fillies. They took the ball
down court and were patient
until there was an open shot
for two. Heppner started to
slow down a bit but were still
hustling on defense. Towards
the end of the quarter Heppner
started to get in a little foul
trouble and was down by two
at the end of the quarter 23-25.
The tip off went to the
TigerScots to start the fourth
quarter. The Fillies started to
take control and pulled ahead.
However, towards the end of
the quarter, Weston McEwen
started to make a comeback
and pulled ahead of the Fillies
by one to win the game. The
final score was Heppner Fil
lies 31, Weston McEwen Tiger
Scots 32. .
