How Nuclear Power Works A nuclear power plant work on the aame aimple principle aa a foaail fuel plant Water ia heated to produce ateam; the eteam whirl through a turbine and drivea a generator which pro duce electricity. The differ ence it the aource of heat. A nuclear plant uaei uranium a a fuel. Foaail fuel plant ue oil, gaa and coal, but the uranium ia not burned like the other fuel to produce heat. Inatead, the uranium undergoes a proceaa called fiaaion, in which certain aloma of ura nium split, cauaing a releeae of energy, in the form of heat, to boil the water and make the ateam. Not all uranium ia auited to fiaaion. In fact, lea than one percent of natural ura nium ia in the proper form, or isotope, to be uaed aa a fiuiionable material in reac tor. Uranium muat undergo a prrx-eaa called enrichment to inrregae the concentra tion of the fiuionable ieo lope, U235. The enriched uranium, with the U235 iaotope now making up two to four per cent of the total uranium mix, i then converted into nuclear fuel pelleta, about the i.e of a thimble, which are inM-rted into 12-foot long nuclear fuel rod. Theae long tlender roda are then bundled together into fuel Ntemhlie containing doz en of fuel rod. In a typical reactor core, there are about 36.000 fuel rod containing about 100 ton of uranium. The nucleus of the atom split and divide into lighter elementa. Energy, in the form of heat, and two or three neu tron are releaaed. These stray neutron atrike other 17235 atom, cauaing a chain reaction that produces enor mous heat and energy. The reaction in the core is con trolled by the insertion of control roda which abaorb the neutrons and stop them from hitting more U235 atoma. There are two main types of nuclear power reactors used commercially in the United State. The Preaaur ized Water Reactor (PWR) ia an offahoot of the re actor developed by the Navy for uae in it subma rine, in the PWR. water is circulated through the re actor core but it ia kept un der preaaure so it does not boil. This heated water is tranaferred to another unit, the ateam generator, where the ateam to run the tur bine ia produced. The other kind of reactor ia the Boil ing Water Reactor (BWR). In this reactor, the water boils aa it paaaes through the core and generates steam directly. Nuclear power accounted for about 13 percent of all electricity generated in 1982, and la expected to riae to more than 20 percent by the turn of the century.
