February 2. 1984 Heppner woman tells of group's trip to New York City By MARY ANN CERULLO Three and a half weeks have passed but four local residents are still recounting their seven-day whirlwind New years vacation to New York City. The tour was arranged by my husband, Larry Cerullo. through Breakaway Tours of Lake Oswego, Oregon. Larry teaches language arts at Hep pner High School and offered the vacation package to stu dents and teachers especially those who were interested in theater. Accompanying him were two Heppner High stu dents, Sandra Wattenberger of Echo and Loran Hayes of Heppner, plus myself. Flying out of Portland the day after Christmas, we join ed 90 Oregonians also going to New York with Breakaway Tours. We quickly made some friends with the people seated around us. Most of them were connected with their school's drama department in some way, since the focus of the tour was to be around theater. Later our group of 94 met up with over 300 more from Ore gon and California. Our first taste of New York was with a brisk walk around the theater district where we were staying to get our bear ings. The temperature was only around 15 degrees but the group quickly learned that New York's wind-chill factor was nothing to be laughed at. Our second taste of the big apple was a $1.50 cup of coffee at a steak house to recover from our cold midnight walk. It should be made clear that none of us carried our valu ables on our person. What money Larry and I had. he carried in his front pant's pocket. The remainder was kept as traveler's checks until needed. lone students raise funds for Golden Pioneer statue lone Elementary School students had fun during Janu ary studying their state's svmbols and helping to raise money to repair the gold plating on the Golden Pioneer statue which stands on the Oregon Capitol Building. . reports Betty Rietmann. first grade teacher at the school. On February 14. Oregon will celebrate its 125th anniver sary as a state. At that time. Verne Duncan, state superin tendent of public instruction, will present Governor Vic Atf yeh with the money raised by state school students to repair the "Golden Pioneer." To learn more about Ore gon's symbols. Rietmann ex plained, the lone kindergarten studied pioneers and learned why a statue of a pioneer is on our state capifo!. The first, second and third grades learned what Oregon's state symbols are. They learned that the state bird is the Western Meadowlark: the state fish, the Chinook Sal mon: the state rock is a Thunderegg: and the Douglas Fir is the state tree. The third grade also combined state symbols in hanging mobiles depicting Oregon. Our first day began with the four of us meeting our guide for the next three days. Her name was Barri Jacobs. She was an actress with ex perience in both soap operas and commercials. We started out with a tour of Rockefeller Center which included a walk through Radio City Music Hall. While we were there a Christmas show was about to start and we saw the live animals that were a part of it. The tour included a climb to the top of the RCA. building where we got a bird's-eye view of New York's skyscrapers on one side and St. Patrick's Catholic Church on the other. Quinn Tullis (left). The fifth and sixth grades are writing essays on "Oregon Pioneer Spirit" for the state of Oregon essay contest. The fifth grade also studied data on the "Golden Pioneer" statue. They learned inte resting facts about its size. (16.700 pounds and 24 feet tall), and cost of construction. Studios, rode the Staten Island ferry for a nighttime view of the Statue of Liberty and of course, took a ride on New York's infamous subway. Barri later told us that the best time to see the Statue of Liberty was at night when it and the skyline were all lit up. Seeing the statue close up wasn't worth it. she said, because its reconstruction isn't scheduled until spring. ( Continued next week ) song. "Oregon. My Oregon." as well as "Roll On.
