6th league win

The Heppner Mustangs de
feated the Umatilla Vikings
5.1-40 in a wild affair Friday
night at Umatilla. The Mus
tards are now 2-4 in the
league, both wins against the
Vikings. The first quarter was
fast paced and full of action,
with the Mustangs running
riRht with the Vikings. The
first quarter ended with the
score tied at 14.
"We wanted to keep them In
a half-court game and get the
hall inside on offense," said
Coach Brent F.ggers.
The second quarter was as
even as the first; the Vikings
scored one more point than
Heppner and led by one at the
half.
The third quarter was the
decider for the Mustangs,
even though they only out
scored Umatilla by four,
that's all the lead they needed.
Umatilla was unuhle to regain
the lead in the fourth and
Heppner went on to win.
Rod Cole led the balanced
scoring attack for Heppner
with 13 points, followed by
Mark Way with 10. Viking
guard Rob Salamanca led the
Vikings with 18 -
Umatilla out -rebounded the
Mustangs 33-31 and also out
shot Heppner from the free
throw line connecting on 10 of
17 Heppner was three for
eight.

Mustangs trample Wahtonka

Last year the Wahtonka
Eagles beat the Heppner Mus
tangs by one point at Heppner.
This year the new Mustang
squad shot a blistering 62
percent from the field and
totally dominated the second,
third and fourth quarters to
return the favor at Wahtonka
with a 62-45 victory,
"I think we're playing with
more confidence as a team."
said Coach Brent Eggers. "We
lust took control of the game."
Heppner started out slow in
the first quarter but stayed
right with Wahtonka and the
first quarter was tied at 14
The second stanza, however,
was a different story. The
Mustangs came out like gang
busters, out-scoring the
Eagles 17 to 8. led by John
Martin with seven. Heppner
had a nine point lead at the
half. 31 22
The third quarter wasn't as
bad for Wahtonka but it was
good for the Mustangs. Greg
Orr scored 11 points in the
period and Heppner had con
trol of the game.
The fourth quarter was slow
paced as Heppner made good
on Iheir free-throws and
played good team defense for
the win the Mustangs not only
shot well from the field, but
also from the foul line connec
ting on 12 for 20. Wahtonka
was 7 for 22 at the line and 19
of 41 from the field.
The Mustangs had a great
game from Orr. He scored 23
points, grabbed six rebounds,
and handed out nine assists.
Tim Olsen knocked in 18 points
for the losers The Mustangs
are now 3-4 in league and 8 7
overall
This Friday, the Mustangs
will travel to Maupin to meet
Wasco Co. On Saturday they
will host Sherman Co. Both
games will begin at 8 p.m.

The Heppner Varsity Fillies
traveled to Umatilla Friday.
Jan. 27. to take their sixth
league win.
Heppner received the tip off
to start the game, and took it
down court to look for an open
shot. The Fillies were reboun
ding well but after they got the
rebounds, they put the shots
up but they just wouldn't go In.
The Fillies were patient on
offense. They ran through
Iheir plays until there was
someone open on the inside.
Heppner was playing pretty
good defense, forcing the Vi
kings to take the outside shots.
At the end of the first quarter
the Fillies were on lop 8-6.
The second quarter was
started with the Fillies recei
ving the tip off. II was close all
the way through the second
quarter. The Heppner girls
were playing good ball but
their shots just weren't drop
ping through the hoop. Hep
pner was rebounding well de
fensively but not quite as good
offensively. By the end of the
second quarter the score was
tied at 11.
Heppner came back from
the locker room after half
time readv to go. Ther ball
was tossed up and the tip off
went to Heppner. The Fillies
continued to play the game the
same wav as thry did during
first half. Good defense and
good rebounds put Heppner a
couple of points ahead of the
Vikings at the end of the third
quarter. The score was 22 - 20.
The fourth quarter started
as the ball went up. Fillies
really wanted it and it was
tipped a little too hard and the
ball went out of bounds. The
Vikings took the ball down
court but tough defense kby
the Fillies forced Umatilla to
turn it over. The Fillies were
really starting fo play ball.
They took control at the be
ginning of the fourth quarter
and kept it until the end.
Finally Heppner's shots star
ted to drop in the basket and
the score went up. Heppner
continued to get up in the air
for the rebounds dand put the
shot right back up. By the end
of the fourth quarter the Fil
lies came out on top to win the
game 39-26.
"It's always nice to win on
the road, especially against a
contending team. Every win is
a big win this late in the
season." said Heppner's
coach, Mike Royer.
Jodi Padberg had 11 points
for the Fillies while Lana Reid
had 10. Stephi Payne had three
assists and Lana Reid had five
steals. Lana Reid also had 11
rebounds while Padberg had
10.
An autographed Portland
Trailblazer basketball and an
autographed Oregon Slate
University basketball will be
given away by the H CTub at
Heppner's last home basket
ball game of the 1983-84 season
against Pilot Rock on Feb
ruary 17.
The donation-drawing acti
vity is a fund raising project of
the lettermen of HHS to help
defray expenses incurred by
purchasing warmups for the
boys' varsity basketball team
this year.
H-Club members and
coaches will have donation
tickets available for the public
until the February 17 drawing.
Tickets will also be available
at home games against Sher
man County and Weston
McEwen. as well as the night
of the drawing. The drawing
will take place during half
time of the boys' game against
Pilot Rock.
Ths English of the 15th to 17th centuries believed that
the color red wai helpful to the sick. Patients were dressed
in red nightgowns and surrounded with red objects.

The Heppner JV Fillies
traveled to Umatilla Friday,
Jan 27 to compete against the
Umatilla Vikings.
The ball was up and tipped
to a Viking to start the game.
Heppner hustled back on de
fense through and kept the
Vikings from scoring The
Fillies' tough defense forced
the Vikings to turn the ball
over and Heppner took the ball
all the way in for two. The
Heppner team was having a
little trouble rebounding but,
improved as the game went
on Umatilla was ahead at the
end of the first quarter 10-7.
Heppner received the tip off
to start the second quarter but
Inst it as they took it down
court. The Fillies were really
hustling, playing great de
fense. Heppner was reboun
ding much better. By the end
of the second quarter the score
was tied at 14.
Heppner was back out on the
court fired up and ready to
plav. The tip off went to
Umatilla and the Vikings also
got the first two points of the
thrid quarter. This discou
raged the Fillies a bit and they
started to slow down both
offensively and defensively.
Heppner also started to get
Into foul trouble. Towards the
end of the third quarter, Hep
pner started to make a come
back to leave the third quarter
tied up at 22 22.
The fourth quarter started
with the tip off again going to
Umatilla. Heppner's tough
defense forced the Vikings to
turn the ball over. Heppner
took the ball down court but
didn't make the shot. Heppner
continued to keep fouling
which led the Vikings to the
free throw line. Heppner was
playing great defense and by
the end of the fourth quarter
the score was again tied,
which led the teams into over
time. The tip off went to Heppner.
The Fillies took the ball down
court and set it up to run
through their plays. The Fil
lies' defense was great. They
started using a press and
before the Vikings could get it
down court Heppner had a
steal and went for a lay in and
two easy points.
Heppner's rebounds on de
fense were super. Finally the
game was over and the Fillies

"We were a little slow on
ojiense during the first half,
but woke up and played well,
the second half. We pulled
down 32 rebounds which
helped us a lot. We have had
problems on the boards in the
past games.
"I was pleased with the way
the girls played." said Coach

The lone junior high girls'
basketball team fell to 15
following a 36 to 8 loss to the
Helix Grizzlies on Thursday.

Helix jumped oiS to an 8-1
lead in the first quarter.
In the second period the
Grizzlies again scored eight,
compared to three for lone.
Helix led 16 to 3 at the break.
The Grizzlies increased
heir lead to 31 5 at the end of
'he third stanza.
Helix out -scored the Cardi
nals four to three in the fourth
quarter to win 36 8.
Both teams shot 29 percent
from the foul line. lone was 4
of 14 compared to 2 of 7 for the
Grizzlies.
