VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK
Plana for Heppner'a 1984 St. Patrick'a Day celebration are
being discussed throughout the town now, but we would like
to commend one Heppner man for his unselfish devotion to
the celebration. Overheard at a local auto dealership no
names please) the Individual volunteered to have the St.
Patrick's Day committee fly him to Dublin where he would
place a personalized phone call from an authentic Irish pub,
back to Heppner on the big day. (Well somebody has to do it).
ANOTHER ONE BYTES THE DUST
Yet another area business has succumbed to the lure of a
high-tech computerized office space. Rletmann's Hardware
in lone has Installed a brand new little silicone buddy named
Kaypro II. Owner-bookkeeper Maxine Rletmann is reported
ly "getting to know the little fellow" at this time.
BRANDED
Most cattlemen brand their livestock, but there ii at least
one area rancher who has branded his very own rock ... with
the sign of the Thunder bird. At least, he claims it's his very
own, even though it was branded on someone else's and.
Now a third party is involved and has hauled off the famous
rock to add to his own landscaping.
A brand is a brand and a rock is a rock, claims the rancher,
and he wants his branded rock back.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN
Last week's "Where have you been, on a desert island?'
award goes to Gazette-Times Editor Pattl Allstott, who when
asked which team would win the Super Bowl on Sunday,
answered (as probably many other women did), "Who's
playing"
Another 'Dallas'?
With a natural gas company moving Into the area soon to
drill etploratory gas and oil welln, could we have another
"Pallas" on our hand? The drilling site Is located on the
Jerry Dougherty property north east of llrppner. Maybe In
the future we'll be hearing J.I), say. "Darlin'. get J.R. on the
phone for me..." Or If not another "Dallas." maybe
"Dougherty's Dynasty"?

Saturday. Jan. 21.
The Fillies came out on the
court fired up and ready to
start the game. Heppner was
really hustling to get the de
fensive rebounds. Heppnqr's
offense was a little slow. Stan
field was playing good de
fense, forcing the Fillies to
take the outside shots. At the
end of the first quarter Hep
pner was ahead
The second quarter was
started by the Fillies receiv
ing the tip off. Heppner took
the ball down court for two
points. Towards the end of the
second quarter the Tigers
started using a full-court
press. Heppner came through
that pretty easy, and after a
time out the Fillies also start
ed to use a press. At the end of
the first half Heppner was still
ahead.
The second half of the game
started with the Fillies reciev
ing the tip off. but Heppner
just fell apart. The Fillies
weren't playing to their best
ability at all but had enough
lead in the first half of the
game to pull through with
their fifth league win. The
final score was 31-36.
Jodi Padberg led the team
with 12 points. Lana Heid had
10 rebounds. Stephi Payne had
seven assists and Pam Orr

Month for January.
Mrs. Jones was bom Sep
tember 5. 1889 in Ashland to
Mr. and Mrs. Charley A. Mil
ler. She grew up in the Wil
lamette Valley, attending
schools in Ashland and Cottage
Grove. Her father was a rail
road agent who worked in the
shipping department.
On November 9, 1909. she
married Charles N. Jones. Mr.
Jones moved to Oregon from
Clifton. North Carolina in 1903.
He worked as a sheep herder
for Anton Vey. The couple had
six children: Paul Jones,
Charles Jones, Floyd Jones,
Lois Graybeal and Lorn a Chal
fant and Vallis Washburn.
Mrs. Jones was a school
teacher at the Eightmile
School. She and Maude Point
er, another resident at the
nursing home, took their
teaching exams together 75
years ago.
During her years in Heppner
she has been an active mem
ber of the Christian Church.

Winners of the 12th annual Elks Hoop Shoot
Contest received their trophies last Wednesday.
The event was held Saturday, Jan. 14, at
Heppner and lone school gyms. A total of 70 kids
participated in the event.
