To the editor:
I just mailed a check to the
Wildlife Heritage Foundation
to help pay for the winter
feeding of starving game in
Baker County.
The game boys here should
open the deer season another
two weeks and give the bow
hunters a year around season,
plus open the doe season, and

To the editor:
I would like to dispel a
number of rumors about the
Morrow County Search and
Rescue Unit that seemed to be
going around. They apparent
ly range from being disbanded
to falling apart. Just the op
posit is true. The Search and
Rescue Unit is alive and well.
Our roster shows 16 current
and active members. Dan Mc
Bride is coordinator and Nor
ris Dooney is captain of the
unit. They are an active,
needed group of volunteer
citizens.
These people should be high
ly commended for their time
and effort in producing a
highly professional organiza
tion. The Search and Rescue
Organization has traditionally
been coordinated through the

iff's Department at the Mor
row County Courthouse in
Heppner handled the following
calls, cases and reports during
the past week:
On January 17, Boar dm an
police and a Boardman am
bulance responded to the Shell
station for a male who was
injured. The ambulance trans
ported him to Good Shepherd
Hospital in Hermiston.
Also on January 17, a Mor
row County sheriff's deputy
and Boardman police arrested
Stephan Charles Smiley, 21, of
Hermiston on a Hermiston
Police Department warrant
and three Spokane, Wash.
County warrants. He was
lodged at the Hermiston Safe
ty Center.
On January 20, a Boardman
ambulance responded to an
industrial accident at U & I,
Inc., Boardman. One female
was transported to Good
Shepherd Hospital.
On January 22, Thomas
John May, 24, of Ukiah, was
arrested by a Morrow County
sheriff's deputy for alleged
Driving Under the Influence of
Intoxicants. He was released
on his own recognizance.

trouble with deer here in Mor
row County. We used to see 50
to 70 deer in Dick Wilkinson's
Meadows each time we went to
the park. Now there is no more
than five to 10. All cowmen
save some of the stock to get
calves.

The Morrow County district
attorney's office at the
Morrow County Courthouse in
Heppner handled the following
cases during the past week:
- Christine Harding, 29, of
Hermiston, was arraigned in
Morrow County Circuit Court
on charges of alleged Second
Degree Theft and Possessioa
of a Controlled Substance. The
charges alleged that between
December 19 and 20, Harding
took Demerol from Pioneer
Memorial Hospital in Hep
pner, where she was employed
as a registered nurse.
- Charles F. Ferguson, 31,
Heppner Highway, Echo, was
arraigned and entered a plea
of not guilty to charges of
alleged First Degree Rape
and First Degree Sexual
Abuse in Morrow County Cir
cuit Court.
-Tony Lee Wyatt May, 22, of
Richland, Wash., was arraign
ed on three separate indict
ments for alleged First
Degree Burglary in connec
tion with the September break
-ins at 10 cabins in the Penland
Lake area. He pleaded not
guilty to the charges.
- Arthur J. Martinez, 24, of
McNary, pleaded guilty to a
charge of Driving While Re
voked. He was sentenced to
one year of probation.

St. Patrick's Day
Heppner residents and busi
ness people are gearing up for
Heppner's third annual St.
Patrick's Day celebration on
Saturday, Mar, 17. A group of
interested people met last Fri
day to discuss the upcoming
event.
A full day of activities is in
the making, starting with a
continental breakfast served
by the TOPS Club, and ending
with a dance at the Heppner
Elks Lodge. A parade is being
planned, a brunch will be held

slide presentation of trip

Wednesday evening, Feb. 1,
at 7:30, the Rev. John Maas of
the Hope and Valby Lutheran
churches will show his slides
from his last summer's tour of
the Holy Land in the basement
of the United Methodist
Church.
Alma Green, President of
the United Methodist Women,
states that the public is invited
to come to the presentation
before the regular February,
first -Wednesday meeting of
'the women's group.
Surplus cheese
to be given
away Tues.
More surplus government '
cheese will be given out to
those who qualify at the Hep
pner Neighborhood Center on
Tuesday. Jan. 31, announced
Pat Brindle. center coordinat
or. The cheese may be picked
up between 9:3C a.m. and 4:30
p m. on Tuesday only.
Those who are not able to
pick up the cheese are asked
to call the center, 676-5873, so
that it can be reserved,
Brindle said.
