Varsity Cards defeat Condon

BMCC tuition to remain unchanged

The lone boys' varsity bas
ketball team is 3-5 after de
feating the Condon Blue
Devils 52-42 on Tuesday. Dec.
20. on the Devils' home court.
Both teams had problems
scoring any points in the open
ing period. Condon took a six
to four lead. All of the Cardi
nal points came from Randy
McCabe.
lone came right back with 17
second stanza points com
pared with 14 Blue Devil
points. Scott Miller and Dar
rell Aamodt kept Condon close
with six points apiece. The
Cards had an advantage of
21 20 at the break.
McCabe tossed in 11 third
quarter points as lone in
creased its lead to 36-30.
lone went on to win 52-42 by
out-scoring Condon 16 to 12 in
the final quarter.
McCabe led the Cardinals in
scoring with 23 points. Darrin
Padberg came off the bench to
add 10. Craig Hams and
Howard Leavitt grabbed 13
rebounds each and McCabe
got 10 as lone had a season
hiKh 46 it-bounds. Hams also
passed for five assists.
Freshman Miller tossed in
12 for Condon.
The Cardinals made 16 of 28
free throws for 57 percent and
IR of 53 field goals for 34
percent. The Blue Devils were
17 of 60 for 28 percent from the
field and eight of 12 for 67
percent from the foul line.
On Friday. Jan. 6. lone
opens its Big Sky Conference
league games with a trip to
Helix to play the Griirlies.
The Cards then go to Arlington
on Saturday. Jan. 7, for a
match with the Honkers.

The Blue Devils out-scored
the Cardinals 13-3 in the
second period to take a half
time lead of 35-8. Sandi Wright
had all three of lone's points.
lone was shut-out in the
rhird quarter. Condon scored
II to increase the lead to 46-R.
Both teams scored six points
in the final quarter as the Blue
Devils won 52 to 14.
At the free throw line. lone
made six of 24 for 25 percent.
Condon shot 31 percent mak
ing four of 13.
Sandi Wright led the Cards
with seven points and 11 re
bounds. La Rue. Mallgren and Leann
Moffit tossed in eight for the
Blue Devils, followed by Amy
Dver and Kelly Eakin with
seven.
The Cardinals play at Helix
on Friday. Jan. 6. and at
Arlington on Saturday. Jan. 7.

Tuition at Blue Mountain
Community College will re
main at the same level for a
third year in accordance with
a decision made by the college
hoHrtl at their December 21
meeting, announced a college
spokesperson.
Since the 1982-83 school
vear. tuition at the college has
been set at $15 per credit hour
or $180 per term for full time
imlistrict students. That rate
will remain in effect for the
19R4 ftS school year.
Comparative tuition figures
presented to the board by
College President Ron Daniels
showed BMCCM to be in line
with annual tuition charges of
central Oregon Community
College. Portland Community
College and Tillamook Bay
Community College Educa
tion District.
In other money matters, the
hoard also left equalization
reimbursement at the current
level of four cents per mile.

time students residing outside
of a 10 mile radius from
campus Mileage reimburse
ment for staff using private
vehicles on college business
was left at the current 18.5
cents per mile rate.
Kevin Kimball, representa
tive of Morrison & Fife ac
counting firm, presented the
KIK2 83 audit report to the
board. With some suggestions
for budgeting grant monies,
Kimball pronounced the col
lege to be "in a very strong
cash position at this time."
Action on dispensation of
UiH2 overcollected taxes was
postponed pending a ruling by
the Oregon Department of
Revenue. The college has re
quested that the tax collec
tor's error be rectified by
applvj,uVthe overcollected
taxes as a tax offset against
Umatilla County's portion of
the college's 1M4 nx levy.

to 30 loss on Tuesday. Dec. 20.

goals in the second period. The
Blue Devils intermission
count was 22. the Cardinals
had seven.
In the third stanza. lone cut
Condon's lead to 29-16 by
out-scoring them nine to
seven.
Steve Miller netted seven
fourth quarter points for Con
don as the Devils won 41 to 30.
Eric Pointer tossed in six in
the quarter for the Cards.
At the foul line lone made 36
percent on 4 of 11 shots. The
Blue Devils made 7 of 17 for 41
percent.
Pointer led the Cardinals
with nine points, all of them in
the concluding half.
Miller and Todd Barnett had
11 each for Condon.
The Cardinals play at Helix
on Friday. Jan. 6. The contest
will start at 4:30 p m.

named to
EOSC honor
roll

Eastern Oregon State College
at La Grande have been
named to the fall quarter
honor roll, the college has
anounced. John Bier and
Maureen Healy were among
195 students who were named.
To qualify for the honor roll,
students must have a grade
point average of 3.5 or higher
on 12 graded credits that term.
Of the 195 students. 56 had a
4 0 or a straight A average.

salmon or steelhead is caught
and kept, anglers are remin
ded there are blanks that ask
for approximate number of
davs fished and numbers of
fish caught and released.
These should be filled out
before the tag is returned.
New salmon-steelhead tags
for 1984. available from li
cense agents now. will be a
little different than the 1983
cards. Swartz says. Instead of
one code number for steel
head. the new cards will show
two codes. One is for steelhead
with a clipped fin. indicating a
hatchery steelhead marked by
the department, and another
code is designated for steel
head with no clipped fins.

wrote his carnival in the early
1930s. Parts of his collection of
writings were published dur
ing the years from 1931
through 1945 when Harper
Brothers brought out his Car
nival which is illustrated by
the author. Its cover states
"We are quite willing to go on
record as saying flatly that we
doubt if any book published in
1945 will contain as much
concentrated brilliance, wild
humor, and innocent wisdom.
The local drama group is
using playbooks based on that
collection of writings. A talen
ted group of more than a dozen
area persons will act out
