Boise, Idaho Bible College will
be the speaker Sunday, Dec. 4
at the Christian Church in
!exlngton.
Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Messen
ger, Sr.. and Mr. and Mrs.
Carol Messenger and family
of Portland were dinner
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Randy
Hughes on Thanksgiving Day.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Bu
chanan returned home Sunday
from several days spent in
Hillsboro and the Portland
area.
Lexington Grange held a
regular meeting on Monday,
Nov. 21. A potluck dinner was
enjoyed, followed by a slide
presentation of Mr. and Mrs.
Norman Nelson's trip to the
South Pacific for his Sea Bees
reunion.

The Christmas meeting with
an exchange of gifts was
planned Gifts must be hand
made, such as food stuffs or
decorations. All are anxious to
see what the men grangers
are making.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mar
quardt and Mr. and Mrs. Doug
Marquardt were guests of a
daughter. Charma, in Port
land for Thanksgiving.
Mr. and Mrs. G.E. Irvin of
Irrigon and Mr. and Mrs. C.C.
Jones were Salem business
visitors Tuesday, motoring on
to Depoe Bay where they
spent Thanksgiving with the
Jones' daughter, Charlene and
her family.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hudson
from La Grande spent several
days last week at the C.C.
Jones ranch.
Gerry and Sue Messenger
from Portland spent the
weekend with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. T.E. Messenger, Sr.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bur
cham spent the weekend in
Condon with a son and his
family. Mr. and Mrs. Mike
Burcham.
Mr, and Mrs. Norman Nel
son attended the Wheat
league meeting in Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nel
son and son visited over the
holidays with her family in
Tacoma, Wash .
A Sunday potluck dinner
was held at the Lexington
Christian Church with a good
crowd in attendance.

perating from major eye sur
gery at the home of a daugh
ter. Ann Chick, in Portland.
Erda Pieper and Paul
Morey visited relatives in
Portland over Thanksgiving.
They were guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Earl Hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Stacy Brown
of Newport have been visiting
at the home of her mother,
Erda Pieper.
The Garden Bugs will meet
at the Rebekah Hall on Thurs
day at 1 p.m. for their Christ
mas meeting. There will be an
exchange of Christmas
cookie. Also, each member is
to bring two jars of jam or
jelly for the Christmas boxes
prepared at the Heppner
Neighborhood Center.
A Rebekah card party will be
held Saturday evening, Dec. 3,
at the hall. The public is
invited. Prizes will be given
and refreshments will be
served.
Mr. and Mrs. Glover Peck
were Thanksgiving dinner
guests of her sister, Mable
Ring, in lone.
Tht firit steamship to cross the Atlantic, the S.S.
Savannah, traveled from Savannah, GA. to Liver
pool, England, on 1819. The voyage took 29 days.

Heppner woman celebrates 100th Over $1,000 raised at benefit game

Nellie Blanchat
A Heppner woman, Nellie
Blanchat. turned 100 years old
last Friday, Nov, 25.
A resident of Pioneer Mem
orial Nursing Home, Mrs.
Blanchat was born in Iowa
and traveled west to Oregon
by train and wagon with her
family when she was three
years old. Her father built the
first school between Ontario
and Vale, which she attended.
She married and had two
daughters and one son, all now
deceased. Mrs. Blanchat
helped to raise her grand
children and some great
grandchildren, recalls Jane
Richards, one of Mrs. Blan
chat's grandchildren.
She worked in a ship yard on
Swan Island, Wash, during
World War II and also worked
as a waitress in the formal
dining room at Timberline
IKlge and other restaurants.
She enjoyed needle work
and cross word puzzles.
Her family was here to greet
her on her birthday and the
Pioneer Memorial Hospital
Auxiliary gave her a party
complete with a decorated
birthday cake on Monday,
Nov. 28.
The sport of skiing is said
to have begun in Telemark,
Norway about 1860.
About $1,000 in donations
was taken in at the door at a
benefit basketball game last
Friday night for Doug and
Darwin Ansotegui of Heppner.
Two brothers occupied a
home that burned in a No
vember 11 fire.
Four teams of city league
basketball players took each
other on In two games with a
large crowd of spectators'
cheering on their favorite
teams. John Kilkenny's team
won over Greg Johnston's
squad, and in the second
game. Gar Aviation prevailed
ovr a team of recently
graduated HHS men.
Many door prizes, donated
bv local merchants, were
given away at half time and
the HHS Dance Team as well
as the Heppner High Band
performed.
Funds were also raised at a
concession stand, and along
with o'hr donations received,
a totaloffl.110 was presented
to the Ansoteguis.

Comm. to meet
The newly formed Morrow
County Republican Central
Committee will meet at 7 p.m .
Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Heppner
Elks Lodge.
All 22 precinct people have
been appointed and officers
elected according to Ken Tur
ner, chairman.
Ron McDonald, chairman,
for Ray French's District 59
state legislature primary
campaign, announces a can
didate meeting to follow at 8
p.m.
The public is welcome and
invited to attend. Turner said.
