BMCC tries for
SUA funds
An Application aimed at ob
taining slate funding to establish
a Small Business Assistance Cen
ter at Blue Mountain Community
College was approved by the
BMCC board at their regular
October meeting
The funds, appropriated by the
Oregon legislature, would par
tially fund the first two years of
such an assistance program. If
BMCC'a application is approved,
one full time instructor would be
hired with the grant funds.
This program coordinator
would work with businesses In the
college district with fewer than 50
employees. Workshops and
seminars would be developed for
such firms (n areas such as
financial management, daily
operation, marketing, sales and
inventory,
Following an executive session,
the board approved a revised
form of the Faculty Collective
Bargaining Agreement. The con
tract provides for a 4 7 percent
increase in salaries for the 1983
M school year, an increase in
Insurance payments, and a pro
fessional Improvement fund of
$15,000. The faculty is currently
considering the proposed agree
ment. The college board assigned to
its November meeting two topics
deuling with financial support of
the college. The first topic will be
a public hearing on the question
of what stand, if any, the board
should take on the Property Tax
Relief Plan developed by the
Oregon state legislature.
The legislature determined
that a vote of local taxing dis
tricts Including community col
leges will determine whether the
sales tax proposal will be on the
March 27. 1984 Oregon ballot. A
majority of each of the three
taxing groups (cities, counties
and schools, Including commun
ity colleges) is needed to put the
question to the voters.
The other financial question to
be considered by the board at
their November meeting will be
the options available to the col
lege for dealing with the amount
of 19B2 taxes that were overcol
lected by the Umatilla County tax
assessor. Opinions from the state
attorney general limited the col
lege to two options in dealing with
the error, according to Ron
Daniels, college president.
In other business, the board:
Accepted with regret the
resignation of Jim Pratt, board
chairman, who has taken a job in
Alaska. Under Oregon law, the
board will appoint someone to
take Pratt's place until Xhe
March 27, 19B4 election. At that
time, the voters will elect some
one to serve the remainder of
Pratt's term (through June 30,
1985.)
Authorized the college ad
ministration to proceed with
plans to install a new sprinkler
system, not to exceed $20,000.
President Daniels pointed out to
the board that the existing sys
tem does not cover the total
campus and the pipe size is not
adequate to provide the neces
sary coverage.
