The HHS "C" team ended

HyTK AVIS HYATT
The Heppner Mustangs,
with the help of Eric Thomp
son and a stingy defense,
defeated the Stanfield Tigers
in their final game of the
season 26-8.
Fric Thompson scored all
four of Heppner's touchdowns
and rushed for 131 yards on 13
carries and Mark Way was 3
for 8 for 60 yards and two
Interceptions. (Way. with his
two interceptions, tied the
club marK held by Jeff Orr
last year.)
The defense was also a big
reason for Heppncr' victory.
After an opening 64-yard drive
that led to a Stanfield 8-0 lead,
Heppner marched back.
With a 16-yard run by
Thompson. Rick Rhiel then
made a diving catch for the
two-point conversion to tie it
at 8 8 at the end of the first
quarter. -
In the second quarter,
things started off good for the
Mustangs as John Moyer re
covered a fumble and re
turned it to the 20 . From
thpre. Thompson ran in three
yards for his second touch
down and a 14-8 lead at the
half.
JV Fillies
By DANA REID
The Heppner Fillies' JV
volleyball team played their
last game of the season
against the Condon Blue De
vils. The game was played at
Heppner Tuesday, Nov. 1.
The Fillies were not very
fired up when they went out
onto the floor. The Blue Devils
started the first match off with
the serve. Heppner wasn't
quite ready and couldn't re
turn it so a point went to
Condon. Condon continued to
serve but Heppner did man
age to return it. And the serve
went to the Fillies. At the
beginning of the first match,
Heppner was doing very well
with serves. But as the match
continued on, Heppner's
serves weren't all going over
Condon was in the lead
hrough most of the match and
Heppner started to give it
away. There were some pretty
good bumps, sets and spikes
for the Fillies but just not
enough. The Blue Devils were
really serving the ball hard
and the ball went everywhere.
Heppner just didn't know
where the ball was going to go
so the Fillies couldn't get
behind it quickly enough. The
first match went to the Condon
Blue Devils. The score of the
first match was 15-9.
Heppner went out on the
floor for the second match a
little more fired up. Heppner
started the match with the
serve. It didn't quite go in so it
was side out and the ball was
turned over to Condon. Condon

When asked about his com
ments on the season. Coach
Craig Kitching stated. "I
thought it was a real positive
season. We played well early
and then leveled off during the
middle. I think we played
better our last three games
than anyone in the league. If
there was a trophy for the
most improved team in the
league. I think we would be in
the running."
When questioned about next
year, the coach said, "We
have to work on weights and
the JV's have to mature and
grow up. It is too early to tell
now. but it's not too early to
start."
Heppner finished the season

HHS JV Volleyball
team boasts 10-1
win-loss record
Bv DANA REID
As the season ends, the
Heppner High JV volleyball
players came out with a great
win-loss record of 10-1. The
best in a long time. The Fillies
beat Condon twice, Arlington
once. Weston-McEwen twice,
Umatilla once, Stanfield
twice, and Pilot Rock twice.
They lost to Umatilla once.
The JV Filly team consisted
of Dana Reid (10), Cammie
Papineau 02), Missy Gates
(14). Andrea Ball (20), Missy
Eubanks (22), Jennifer
Hughes (24). Sandy Kelsay
(30). Jodi Mattison (32), Pen

(4). Janice Martin (42), Kim
George (44). and Coach Karen

When asked how the Fillies
thought their season turned
out, they replied:
"I thought we had a great
team. We had the quality to
make it all the way. For a few
games we lost confidence in
ourselves and our teammates
but when we got the confi
dence back we did great. We

hustle and go for the ball.
Towards the end of the match,
Heppenr started to slow down
a little but kept it up enough to

Dana Reid.
"It's nice to have a 10-1

of just once in awhile," replied
player Andrea Ball.
"The best match we played
all season was our first match
against Umatilla. We were
serving and moving well on
the court. The girls worked as
a team trying to bump, set and
spike. They were communica

positions. This teamwork was
fun to watch but what really
stood out in my mind was their
enthusiasm and will to win.
They gave 100 percent of
themselves during the game
and it paid off. All of us were
mighty proud of that win! We
finished our season 10-1, which
is the best JV record achieved
by a team that I have coached.
They were a fun group to work
with." said Coach Karen
