Pilot Rock Rockets take 14-7 victory
over Heppner Mustangs

The Pilot Rock Rockets re
turned home last Friday night
with a 14-7 victory over the
Heppner Mustangs.
Cam George scored a
touchdown for Heppner in the
first quarter on a dive play,
followed by Bob Harris kick
ing the extra point.
A field goal was attempted
by Bob Harris in the second
quarter, but wasunsiiccessful.
"We had our tee set up
wTong. We needed to angle it.
We made it more difficult than
it already was because we
were in a hurry and over
looked it. It was a minor thing,
but an unfortunate one."
commented Heppner Coach
Craig Kitching.
Heppner had prevented
Pilot Rock from scoring any
more until the fourth quarter.
A touchdown was made by the
Rockets, which had put them
in the lead.
"I was as happy as you can
be. considering we didn't win
the ball game. I don't think I
could be prouder of the way
they (Heppner) played."
Kitching stated. "The only
way I could feel better about
the game was if we had own,
but I don't know that you can
fault our kids. They gave their
best efforts in all four quar
ters." Pilot Rock was every bit as
tough as Heppner expected,
and it proved to be a hard,
physically fought game.
Kitching feels that the mis
takes that the Rockets made,
which were few, were made
up for
"They (Pilot Rock) had a
poor snap on a field goal
attempt that turned into a first
down." Kitching recalls.
The coach was pleased with
the all-around performance of
the team and commented on
their playing. "Our offense did
a better job of picking up the
other team's stunts. We had
more of a success of running
the ball than the previous
weeks We were up against a
Lunch of hard-hitling bail
players."
The defensive line was very
impressive too. "We didn't
back down an inch. I was
really proud to see it. We stood
toe to toe with them for four
quart jers. They (Pilot Rock)
got breaks in the fourth quar-

ter that made the difference in
the ball game."
When asked what he would
like to see out of the players
this week. Kitching replied,
"The same kind of effort this
week as we saw last week -actually
the last two weeks.
That is when we played up to
our potential. We played the
two top teams and I feel that
they were both lucky to come
out with wins. We weren't
outplayed. I feel that we can
play anybody. We proved
that the last two weeks."
The coach feels that Hep
pner seems to play up. or
down, to the level of who they
are playing and found that to
be their only problem.
"I wish the season lasted
longer because we are just
starting to play well.
The Mustangs will face
Stanfield this Friday at 7:30
p.m. in Heppner.
"They have not had a lot of
success in football this year,
but are getting stronger," said
Kitching of the opponents. "It
will be another important ball
game for us. Like I've said
before, there are no really
weak teams in the league this
year."
Stanfield will definitely be a
challenge for the Heppner
players, according to their
coach. "If we don't play as
well as we can play, we'll be in
serious trouble. We'll have to
stop their offense and pick up
their blitzing linebackers. We .
must establish our running
game in order to set up our
passing game."
Hopefully, the spectators
will see a good outcome at
Friday's game. "I don't want
to make any predictions, it's
too early to tell. I hope that we
play well and I think we will."
concluded Kitching.

HHS Fillies make comeback
and win match against W-M
By DAW REID
The Heppner varsity volley
ball team traveled to Athena
to take a win from Weston
McEwen on Tuesday. Oct. 25.
The Heppner Fillies went
out on the floor fired up and
ready to win. The TigerScots
started the match with a good
serve but Heppner was able to
return it. Weston-McEwen
just couldn't receive it so the
ball was turned over to the
Fillies. With excellent serves,
the Fillies continued gaining
points until the score was 6-0.
A mistake for the Fillies gave
the serve back to Weston
McEwen. The match con
tinued with Heppner having
excellent serves. Heppner was
receiving the ball very well.
They got the ball up to the
setter for a set, then a nice
hard spike down to the Tiger
Scots' side of the floor. The
Fillies continued to play an
excellent match and went on
to win 15-5.

The serve went to the Tiger

net serve so it was side out and
the score went to Heppner.
Heppner continued scoring
until it was 4-0. The Fillies
played excellent team ball
throughout the game. Hep
pner was really spiking it and
making the TigerScots work.
Heppner started to slow down
a little and the TigerScots
started to catch up. The score
was soon tied at 9 9. Heppner 's
serves continued to go over
the net. Both teams were
playing very good ball. There
was a lot of long volleys but
Heppner just couldn't get
together so Weston-McEwen
came out on top.
Heppner came out for the
third match a little upset but
that didn't hold them back
any. The Fillies set the ball up
and then had a nice hard
spike. The Fillies were really
hustling. They started out not
talking enough but as the
match went on they began to
talk a little more. The Tiger

The Heppner JV Rirls' vol

Athena on Tuesday, Oct. 23. to
meet Weston McEwen.
The Fillies went out on the
floor for the first match not
really fired up. The TigorScots
started the match with the
serve. Heppner wasn't really
talking or moving much, but
did have some good bumps,
sets and spikes that made
Weston-McEwen really work
for the ball. The TigerScots
were putting their spikes
everywhere and Heppner had
to be ready for anything. But
Heppner just couldn't get it
together and Weston-McEwen
won 15-11.

they were right back in there.
Heppner went back out onto
