Heppner came close to scor
ing in the first half. Coach
Kitching recalls. "We threw in
the endzone one and the
receiver jumped before the
ball got to him. It was a really
good pass, he just got too
excited and the ball went over
his head. I thought we had that
one."
Playing good. hard, aggres
sive defense. Enterprise
pushed the Mustangs back and
prevented them from scoring.
This was also caused by Hep
pner not offensively maintain
ing their blocking. "In re
viewing the films, we saw
people (Heppner players)
block, slip off of their block,
and join in the tackle. This is
not eood execution. Our de-

ving very well, and when thq
Rockets returned the ball, the
Fillies were on their toes and
set it up for another spike. A
few mistakes from the Fillies
didnt stop them any. They
shook them off and were back
in the match. Heppner con
tinued hustling throughout the
match. They were ahead
through most of the match!
The Rockets started to make a
comeback and Heppner star
ted to make more mistakes.
Pilot Rock won the match with
a score of 15-11.
For the third match, Hep
pner went out a little upset,
but after they served the ball,
they had calmed down a bit.
The Fillies scored the first
point and continued scoring
points until the Fillies were
ahead 5-0. Both teams really
wanted to win the game and
were really working for it.
There was quite a bit of net
plav and Heppner usually
came out on top. Both teams
were setting the ball up and
smashing a good hard spike to
the other team. The Fillies
took control of the match and
pulled way ahead of the Rock
ets, showing a score of 10-2.
But the match wasn't over yet
and the Fillies knew it and
thev stayed right in there to
finish it. Heppner won the
match and the game with a
score of 15-4.
"It was a game we needed to
win." said Heppner Coach
Barb Stefani.

HHS JV volleyball team shoots Rockets
By DANA REID
The Heppner JV Volleyball
team played the Pilot Rock
Rockets Tuesday. October 18.
The game was played at Pilot
Rock.
The Fillies started the game
with the first serve. The
serves were going over well
and the Fillies pulled ahead of
the Rockets. As the game
continued. Heppner started to
lose a little of their spirit.
They weren't talking and
moving quite enough but after
a timeout and a pep talk from
the coach, the girls were out
and ready to play once again.
The Fillies kept the lead

third and fourth quarters." He
also added that Heppner had
three interceptions during the
game.
Areas to be worked out by
the player this week will be to
maintain their blocks, to fire
out low on the defensive line,
and to add a few things on
offense that Pilot Rock hasn't
seen yet.
"Pilot Rock." whom the
Mustangs will play in Heppner
Friday-at 7:30 p.m., "Runs
the ball very well. They have a
good offense and a stingey
defense. They don't give up a
lot of points and will probe
around to find our weaknesses
and take advantage of them.
Hopefully they won't find
any." stated Kitching.
"We must now concentrate
on executing on every play, to
maintain our blocks, and to
plav with emotion. We play
better if we play with emotion.
We need to keep a good
attitude as we have in practice
the last couple of weeks."
Kitching added. "I want to
thank all the people that came
out to watch the game. It is
helpful to the team to see all
those people support them. We
would like to see that this
week when we go out and win
the ball game."
Statistics for the game were
not available at presstime.
The game and dance that
followed ended a week of
Homecoming activities at the
school. During halftime, Carla
Miles was crowned Home
coming Queen. Other girls on
the court were Sarah Forrar,
Ann McLaughlin. Stephanie
Payne and Pam Orr. Also,
class floats were driven
around the field for spectators
to view. The senior class took

tition as they have for the past

The Fillies went out for their
second match with the Rock
ets a little upset with them
selves, but they stayed right in
there and took control of the
game. After a timeout for
Pilot Rock, they were fired-up
and firing them down on the
Fillies. Heppner began to lose
control and confidence and
gave the match away to Pilot
Rock. The score was 15-9.
Heppner went out on the
floor for the third match with
a little more enthusiasm. The

The Heppner High School

Monday October 13. to play a
game against the lone Cardi
nals. After a good warm-up. the
Fillies went out onto the court
and were ready to win. They
were serving very well, better
than they have in other games
they've played. It was a good
match for Heppner. The Fil
lies were just out there giving
it all they had. Heppner was
ahead almost all Ihe way
through the match and won it.
The score was 15-12.
The Fillies went out on the
floor for the second match not
quite as fired up and ready as
they were before. They
weren't talking or moving
quite enough but they stayed
in the game. They never gave
up. But over all, the Fillies
played okay. The score was
8-15
The third match was the
best for both teams. This one
decided the game and both
teams wanted it so they were
hustling for the ball no matter
where it went. Heppner had
excellent teamwork. The
Heppner players were really
plaving together well and it
paid off because Heppner won
the match and Ihe game. It
was a close one, but they did
if. The score was 15-12.
"The Fillies were really
fired up and really wanted to
win. They played good team
ball. They had a couple of
bump. sets, spikes." said
Heppner Coach Karen Howe.
Heppner was to meet Wes
