SIX The Heppner Gatette-Times. Heppner, Oregon, Thursday,
Mustangs
By MELISSA PRIVITT
The Heppneir Mustangs
traveled home from the Dalles
last Friday night with a 29-20
victory over the Wahtonka
Eagles.
They led the scoring with
Greg Orr receiving a 15 yard
pass from Mark Way in the
first quarater. followed by
Bob Harris' kicking the extra
point.
Wahtonka then gained con
trol of the ball and let up their
side of the scoreboard with a
touchdown by Walkins on a
six yard run. Their kick for
the extra point failed.
A three-yard pass from Way
to Orr in the second quarter
led the Mustangs to another
touchdown. Eric Thompson
then passed,, the ball to Jim
McConnel for the extra point
and brought in the two-point
conversion.
Trying not to let Heppner
slip too far ahead. Wahtonka 's
DesRochers scored on a 10
yard pass. The Eagles again
failed on the extra point
attempt.
Heppner still maintained
the lead as the third quarter
rolled around, and made sure
they put a stop to Wahtonka 's
scoring while at the same time
increasing their own points.
John Mover made a touch
down on a four-yard run fol
lowed by Thompsoin running
in the extra point. The Mus
tangs still kept control of the
ball and Mover again, made a
touchdown this time on a
22-yard run.
It was then a reversal of
roles in the fourth quarter
when Wahtonka prevented
Heppner from scoring and put
eight more points on the board
for themselves. A seven-yard
pass was received by DesRo
chers and resulted in a touch
down. A pass from Carpenter
to Byers lead to a two-point
conversion.
The Mustangs had faced a
few problems during the game
which had really concerned
the coach. He commented,
Our first major concern was
blitzing linebackers from
Wahtonka. We were not pick
ing them up and this was
causing problems in our back
field. The other was our defen
sive secondary. They were not
covering their areas again.
These are just some of the
things a coach has to take
responsibility for. We need to
drill their assignments into
them during practice."
This game of scoring 29
points was a season high for
the Mustangs and the coach
felt that they did some very
good things and executed well
at times, but feels that they
still need to work on picking
up blitzing and maintaining
blocks. "We also need to work
on past events, that is mainly
putting more pressure on our
quarterback," Kitching
replied.
The hard w ork and weeks of
practice are starting to pay
off. "We're getting better."
stated Kitching. "I think that
the key is that we're not
playing up to our full poten
tial, we're starting to see a
glimmer of what we can be. It
will take a lot of work from the
players and the coaches to
reach our full potential."

bring victory from The Dalles
Kitching felt that this last
win was. "a good stepping
stone" for the players and
would give them confidence as
they travel to Maupin Friday
night to play Wasco County at
7:30 p.m.
"Wasco is a lot like us." the
coach replied. "They do diffe
rent things on offensive and
they like to pass the ball. They
have a good quarterback and
talented receivers. We need to
remember to maintain our
level of execution on offense
and to concentrate on not
being beat on a long pass, and
we will."
Though the players still
have memories of last year
when they played Wasco, the
coach predicted that the team
would put aside any personal
