Jim Thomsons receive
Yard of Month award

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Thomson
BvJlSTINE
WEATHERFORD
The last Yard of the Month
winners for Heppner this year
are Mr. and Mrs. James G.
Thomson, Jr., of 155 South
Court Street. Their oversize
yard has been extra colorful
this year with blooms from
early spring until now. They
were selected to be honored by
the Heppner Garden Hub and
the Heppner-Morrow Cham
ber of Commerce from Sept.
15 until Oct. 15.
The home they occupy was
built in 1918 by the senior J.G.
Thomsons. Jim and Madge,
along with Meredith 11. Ber
nice 7. and Bruce 4. moved
there in 1950 when they pur
chased the house from Jim's
' sisters and brother. For a time
they were busy removing
overgrown shrubbery and
some large rocks. They put in
a cement patio behind the
house and expanded the lawn
area The trumpet vine with
its attractive orange blooms
which climbs up the southside
of their front porch and some
of the daffodils in the yard
were planted by Jim's mother,
Agnes.
Beneficial insect identified
By BOB COSTA
Morrow County
OSU Extension Agent
An insect that stripped the
leaves and flowers from
poison hemlock plants this
summer was identified as
Agonopterix alstroemeriana.
This giant name belongs to a '
tiny moth whose small green
larvae has a tremendous ap
petite for poison hemlock.
The insects were collected
near Heppner in Morrow
County. The insects were also
active in neighboring
counties.
According to the U.S.D.A.
Insect Identification and
Beneficial Insect Introduction
Institute, poison hemlock is
the only plant this insect is
known to feed on. The institute

This year is the first in
which the Thomsons have had
a border of petunias lining
their front walk. The fine
rosebushes along the fence
beside their driveway were
planted in 1981 when they put
in the cement driveway and
parking area. The brilliant
black-eyed Susans along the
Court Street sidewalk have
multiplied until they now
present almost a solid line of
gold.
Both of the Thomsons love
roses and they especially
like spring bulbs and gladio
lus, too. Madge says that pink
roses are her favorites. Be
sides keeping up the large
yard and the flowers. Jim has
a small vegetable garden
toward the back of their lot.
They have a damson plum
tree, two apricot trees and a
new Granny Smith apple tree
that came as an anniversary
gift.
All the members of the
Thomson family and the other
guests who came to attend
their summer 50th anniver
sary celebration praised their
pretty yard which is still
looking delightful as fall ap
proaches. identified the insect speci
mens from Morrow County.
The insect is native to Eur-,
asia and is found from Eng
land to Japan. It was introduc
ed into North America twice
for poison hemlock control.
This is the first report of the
insect from the west coast
according to the U.S.D.A.
Institute.
The long term effect of this
insect on poison hemlock in
our area is unknown.
